About the Author
Rohan Gunaratna is a specialist in the field of the global threat environment, with expertise in threat groups in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. He is the Head of the International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research (ICPVTR) in Singapore, one of the world's largest specialist counter-terrorism research and training centres. Professor Gunaratna is also Professor of Security Studies at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University, and he is a Senior Fellow at the International Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism in Oklahoma. He is a member of the International Advisory Board of the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism in Israel, and a member of the Steering Committee of the Homeland Security Policy Institute at George Washington University. He was also a Senior Fellow at the Fletcher School for Law and Diplomacy and at the Combating Terrorism Centre at the United States Military Academy. In February 2009, he chaired the inaugural International Conference on Terrorist Rehabilitation in Singapore.

Ustaz Dr Mohamed Bin Ali is Assistant Professor at the Studies in Inter-Religious Relations in Plural Societies Programme (SRP), S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. His areas of research include Islamic jurisprudence, Islamist ideology, religious extremism, inter-religious relations and rehabilitation of Muslim extremists. Well-versed in Arabic language and Islamic knowledge, Dr Mohamed obtained his Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Islamic Jurisprudence from Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt in 2002; a Master of Science (MSc) in International Relations at RSIS, NTU in 2007; and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Arab and Islamic Studies from the University of Exeter, United Kingdom in 2013. Prior to that, he studied Islam and Arabic language at Aljunied Islamic School in Singapore from 1990–1995. Dr Mohamed also graduated with a Specialist Diploma in Counselling Psychology from the Academy of Certified Counsellors, Singapore in 2006. Since 2003, Dr Mohamed has been involved in the rehabilitation programme of Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) detainees in Singapore. He is the Vice-Chairman and a counsellor of the Religious Rehabilitation Group (RRG), a group of voluntary Muslim clerics who provide religious counselling to the JI detainees. Dr Mohamed has made numerous presentations locally and abroad, conducted courses and published widely on Islamic issues and issues of religious extremism and terrorist rehabilitation. He has also conducted field trips in many countries including Iraq, Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Bangladesh, Indonesia and the Philippines. Dr Mohamed is also actively involved in community-related works. Currently, he is a member of the Syariah Appeal Board of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) and a member of the Khadijah Mosque Management Board. Dr Mohamed is a former President of the Singaporean Students Welfare Assembly in Cairo, former member of the Council for Asian Terrorism Research and counsellor at the Singapore Prison Department. He has also delivered lectures and sermons in many mosques in Singapore.

Well written, well researched, and on point. Green Giants seamlessly lays out the importance and profitability of a sustainability mindset in our current economic climate. 'Go big' and 'go green' are not only compatible, they are essential partners in creating break-through, billion-dollar companies. What Makes This Book Different?

In the past, if a police sniper wanted a textbook on rifle marksmanship he usually had a choice between an obsolete Army or Marine manual concentrating on iron sights or else a 300-page book on target shooting that had chapters like, "Choosing Your Shooting Jacket".

There's now a book that is a non-technical, non-tactical handbook on Basic Rifle Marksmanship for folks on their way to a sniper school. Contained in the lessons though, is a skill set foundation based on becoming a sniper and not a target shooter or deer hunter.

Time is at a premium in sniper school and the less time that has to be devoted to just learning to shoot means that much more time to learning other sniper skills.

I also wanted to have a basic rifle marksmanship handbook that a Sniper Team Leader could hand copies to a couple candidates and say, "OK, we got a class date in a couple months for a Basic Course; read this book on your own and we'll get together with you all in a couple weeks at the range to do the live fire exercises."
 
In that way by seeing how far they get on their own the Team Leader can find the guys who really want the job, can read and study on their own and will exert some effort to reach their goal.  When they show up on the range, which ones practiced the positions in the book?  Who knows how to read and adjust sights?
 
That and it also is supposed to help trainers by lifting some of the burden of designing the marksmanship portion of a pre-sniper program.

About the Author
John C. Simpson taught his first military sniper school course in 1985 and his first law enforcement sniper class in 1986. He spent five years teaching sniping to Special Forces troops at the Special Warfare Center at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, and three years in Charlie Company in Germany as a team sniper and ultimately as the Company Master Sniper, and two years as chief instructor at the 10th Special Forces Group Sniper Committee at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. While at Fort Devens, Simpson trained police snipers in New York and Ohio as part of Project Northstar.

Since his retirement from the Army in 1994 he's continued to train police and military snipers around the country.

He is the author of  The Sniper's Notebook and has contributed chapters to The Wind Book by Linda Miller & Keith Cunningham as well the American Sniper Association's Sniper Operations and Training Manual. He recently wrote an e-book  on  marksmanship titled 5 Ways to Develop Precision with Your Scoped Rifle available for free download at mdttac.com/ebook

Some good information for those wanting to see what it takes to shoot very long ranges.

I set a record for a rifle from a rest at 1000 yards about 10 years ago. I have also been very successful at tactical, PALMA, F Class, N. M. and plain old fun shoots. That does not make me a sniper, but it does give me an Idea of what it takes to hit a target at 1000 yards, or dope wind, or understand ballistics and good equipment. There is lots of good information in this book. The best information is to shoot often. Doping wind is an art form.

Another excellent offering from Simpson...

John C. Simpson is one of the most highly respected and sought after instructors in the art or craft of sniping. This is his book. He has also published a more definitive work called "Sniper's Notebook" that is somewhat difficult to lay your hands on because he has deemed it to be restricted to LE and military. I have looked at one and if you can find a copy somewhere I would recommend that you get it. This book however is not quite as technical and aimed more at individuals rather than organizations. LE guys have more to worry about than the average civilian. The same can be said for military obviously.

I read this book cover to cover and then went back and studied. There is a LOT of information here. The truth is, there are a lot of "theories" and "wive's tales" laid to rest in this book. It is uniformly excellent throughout.

Their are five major chapter headings that cover Marksmanship Fundamentals, Positions, The Minute of Angle, Reading Your Scope Knobs, and Live Fire Practice. In addition there are two appendices covering Rifle Maintenance, and Ballistics. I cannot emphasize enough the depth of knowledge and useful instruction that is present in this book.

This has quickly become one of my favorite books to carry around and "refresh". It seems like every time I read parts of it I remember something I had forgotten or I learn something new. It is hard to put a value on something like that.

Totally and completely recommended. You will not go wrong with this book.

This guy knows what he's talking about. It wouldn't hurt long time shooters to reacquaint themselves with the basics. Definitely a must for beginners!. Good Job John!

HORRIBLE DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Worst book ever. I'm a college student, so I've experienced bad books every once in awhile. This book burned for the atrocities is caused me and my fellow students. A new book needs to be written. Everything about it is bad. The writing, the bad explanations, the bad exercises.

Great book on Assembly Language

Previously the books on Assembly I have read have been either 100 percent Intel syntax or have been based on DOS Debug, which is pretty antiquated. Reading this book introduced a number of new concepts and was for the most part an enjoyable read. First thing though, this book is designed as a textbook. While the book does cover the basic syntax in Assembly, I feel that it would be a difficult to read for a beginner who has not at least wet their feet in some form of assembly. It is definitely meant to be a book used in a classroom with an experienced facilitator covering the material. Being that it is a textbook, it does have nice exercises at the end of each chapter, if you can get passed the mental block of doing "homework", which are very helpful in understanding the material. The content of the book is very good. A detailed explanation of the different memory models used in the x86-programming model was very informative. I unfortunately did not get passed the Pentium processor programming, but I look forward to going over the MIPS processor when I get a chance and something to develop on.

good skill to cultivate

The Pentium chip dominates the desktop, and this book reflects that. It teaches you the ideas in assembly programming, with a clear emphasis on doing so for the Pentium.

Dandamudi also provides a concise summary of the history of the Pentium, going way back to the 8085 and 8080, around 1982. From these sprang the x86 family. All the way to the 486. But AMD's pesky nipping at the heels caused Intel to lose copyright to "586"; from which Pentium was chosen as the new copyrightable label. Alas, Intel never pushed "Sextium" but instead used "Pentium Pro".

The book has copious examples of assembly code. These are extensively documented inline, to an extent that you will rarely see in most real code. The pedagogy should be clear to most readers. Who are also encouraged to try the problems provided in each chapter. Assembly programming is very different from coding in a higher language like C or Java, and it is a worthy skill to cultivate. And one that is independent of the actual processor family that you code in. If nothing else, the text gives you an underlying qualitative understanding of how higher languages are ultimately expressed in binary executables.

I suppose I should say that there is also some coverage of alternative chip families in the book. Notably some RISC processors. These form a conceptually distinct approach to designing a microprocessor.

The Pacific region had yet to be overrun by drug traffickers, guerrillas, and paramilitary forces in the early 1990s. It was better known as the largest area of black culture in the country (90 percent of the region’s population is Afro-Colombian) and as a supplier of natural resources, including timber, gold, platinum, and silver. Colombia’s Law 70, passed in 1993, promised ethnic and cultural rights, collective land ownership, and socioeconomic development to Afro-Colombian communities. At the same time that various constituencies sought to interpret and implement Law 70, the state was moving ahead with large-scale development initiatives intended to modernize the economically backward coastal lowlands. Meanwhile national and international conservation organizations were attempting to protect the region’s rich biodiversity. Asher explores this juxtaposition of black rights, economic development, and conservation—and the tensions it catalyzed. She analyzes the meanings attached to “culture,” “nature,” and “development” by the Colombian state and Afro-Colombian social movements, including women’s groups. In so doing, she shows that the appropriation of development and conservation discourses by the social movements had a paradoxical effect. It legitimized the presence of state, development, and conservation agencies in the Pacific region even as it influenced those agencies’ visions and plans.

tense psychological thriller

Katherine "Kit" Metcalf and her sister Jenny reacted differently to the family dynamics after their mom died. Whereas Jenny obeyed their martinet father by becoming a cop like him and is engaged to an undercover police officer, Kit chose philosophy in college and avoided anything remotely involving law enforcement. Adding to Kit's estrangement is a rape that she never has come to terms with or gotten over. In anger towards all males, Kit becomes a stripper at Austin's Blaze gentleman's club where she can safely tease men with glass between her and them.

However, the dynamics change again when Austin police detective Jenny, investigating a porn ring and related murder tied to Blaze, is found dead. Needing to obtain justice for the sister she feels she let down, Kit begins to obtain therapy with psychiatrist Dr. Emily Wolfe and investigates her sibling's murder over the objections of everyone she knows. However one objector has personal reasons to prevent Kit from succeeding either with therapy or her case. That adversary attacks Dr. Wolfe and steals Kit's file. Kit ponders if it is her dad, her late sister's fiancé Luke Saner, or someone else close to her who needs the truth to remain buried perhaps in her subconscious mind.

More a psychological thriller than an amateur sleuth tale, fans of both sub-genres and anyone who appreciates a deep character study will want to read this superb candid tale. The story line is action-packed, but it is the psyche of Kit that grips the audience as she grieves with no help from her stiff upper lip family who didn't help her when her mom died. Kim Wozencraft provides an incredible look at a woman over the edge without a safety net. The Devil's Backbone is a chillingly thrilling tale.

Captivating characters, gripping plot

Kit Metcalf wakes up in a park and does not remember how she got there. She's works as a dancer in a gentleman's club called Blaze's in Austin. Kit could not be more different than her sister Jenny. Jenny is a detective, engaged to be married soon. Kit meets Luke, Jenny's fiancé who has been working undercover at Blaze's. Kit was able to fend off an attacker in the club's parking lot. She could barely handle the news that her sister was murdered. Not knowing who to trust, she decides to counseling. Dr. Wolfe is soon threatened to stop seeing Kit and physically attacked. Another dancer from the club, Cheryl is found dead. She can't help but feel she's next. Kit needs to trust Luke as she tries to help him investigate Jenny's death. Complex, psychological thriller that is hard to put down.

Mediocre at best

Cover calls it "A brilliant psychological thriller" I would definitely not go that far. I'm in a Mystery book club and this was the next book on the list. Story line is just Ok, I'd elaborate, but it seems the other reviewers have explained it enough. I guess if you are in the mood for a quick read it's ok, but there are better options.
