Stiil Good Fun on Re-Read as an Adult

Typically, I'm not much of a "re-reader," but this one is an exception for me as it connects back to a few of the last truly happy childhood memories that I have. This was one of the first books I picked up for my new Kindle Fire late last year when Amazon featured a few of Ronald Dahl's books. I'm really glad I picked it up and re-read this one. It was a bit of bright spot for me right now. Ronald Dahl has a very wry and whimsical writing style that won't appeal to all adults. _James and the Giant Peach_ requires the ability to suspend disbelief and just enjoy the outrageous situations, unlikely "critter" traveling companions, and over-the-top villains. If you can suspend adult thinking and just take the story as-it-comes, it's a grand adventure and a lot of fun. I'm really glad I decided to re-read this, even though I don't often re-read books.
For parents, yes, in "Dahl fashion" there is a bit of colorful language in this book. Read it first. Or better yet, read it with your kids and use it as an opportunity for discussion. If your child is younger, and you're reading to them, you could always substitute words, I suppose. Kids hear a lot worse in "real life" on network tv nowadays, so don't let that hinder the enjoyment you could get out of the story.

I'd Forgotten How Good This Is

I read this ages ago when I was a kid. Back then, I didn't really appreciate the poetry, rhythm, and meter of Dahl's writing. Now I'm a dad reading re-reading this tale decades later, only this time, I'm doing so aloud to my four year-old daughter at bed-time.
She's loving it. Reading it out loud is a breeze, and putting Dahl's inflections of his characters' into their conversations is a hoot.
Get this book and read it. If you have kids, read it to them, but you don't need youngsters to enjoy Dahl's writing. There's a reason his work has endured and is considered classic by so many. Brilliant!.

Roald Dahl is a genius!

I think that Roald Dahl is probably the greatest children's author of the 20th century. He's three things that I'm always wanted to be. An Author, a genius, and Norwegian. I'm only one of the three :-) I'll let you guess which ones. Anyway, what a marvelous read and reminder that if life gives you giant peaches make chocolate cake and leave them wondering how you did it!
