Not pictures of cats

This is not a book of cat portraits!

The first book featured a full-page picture of a woman's face on the left page, then a full-page picture of her "kitty" on the right. This formula was apparently successful enough to spawn a sequel.

An interesting premise, to be sure. But make no doubt about it. These images are VERY explicit! Like o.b./gyn explicit. Medical textbooks are more discreet.

Good photos, not erotic

Lots of beautiful photos of faces (on one page) and vulva (on the facing page), but without showing any other part of their bodies. Would be more interesting if at least their hips and their whole pelvic areas were also shown. Too many of them had the labia splayed open; an interesting view, but not the way you'd see them in vivo.

I used this as a textbook for a sexual politics class. The material is fascinating, but the author seems to often forget to mention asexuality in his discussions. His definitions of "queer" are also pretty off, and all of his examples of BDSM in the media are actually examples of abuse/ rape. Sometimes I wonder how much research he actually did before writing a section. His entire chapter on youth intimacy culture is full of things my class disagreed with. However, this book provides great perspective and the opportunity to think critically.

And as the process accelerated, one startling development was the very special relationship that grew between Sadat and Weizman, a shared affection and respect that was both crucial and fascinating. When the Egyptian president confronted Ezer and promised "No more war!," the challenge provoked Weizman and the Israelis to hurl themselves into peace as fiercely as they had waged war. Day and night Weizman worked, openly and secretly, participating in the mercurial ebb and flow, witnessing the birth pangs of the peace treaty until it finally came into being in March of 1979. This "battle for peace" had its moments of tremendous suspense, drama and even humor. Weizman's candor and perception illuminate the personalities that changed the course of history. Weizman was born in Tel Aviv in 1924 into an illustrious family; his uncle was the great Chaim Weizmann, first president of Israel. Early on, Weizman displayed the gifts expected of such a famous clan. At18 he played a major role in Israel's War of Independence. When only 2o he was appointed Air Force Chief of Operations and became its Commander in1958. Audacious as a fighter pilot, his tough, demanding leadership set the pace for Israel's war aces. Long before the Six Day War he prophesied that within six hours a preemptive strike could demolish the Egyptian Air Force and win the war.

An Insider's View of Camp David

This is former Israeli Defense Minister Ezer Weizman's personal account of his tenure as defense minister and his participation in the negotiations that led up to the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty of 1979. For those wishing to get an Israeli perspective on the negotiations a much better book to read is Moshe Dayan's Breakthrough as it was Foreign Minister Dayan who did most of the actual negotiating with Egypt on Israel's behalf. I bought this book because I'm researching a book about rebels in the Likud who broke with it and similar parties. In the end Weizman explains why he resigned from the government in May 1980. He also explains why he was always a lone wolf in the Herut Party founded by Menahem Begin in 1948--he didn't fight in the Irgun against the British and he came from a rich family whose politics were the opposite of those of the Herut/Likud. After retiring from the Israeli presidency in 2000 after embarrassing revelations about having taken money from a rich foreign Jew to help deal with his wounded son's medical expenses he was forced to resign. He then wrote a third book of memoirs that hasn't yet been translated from Hebrew to English.

With the publication of her novel Annie John in 1985, Jamaica Kincaid entered the ranks of the best novelists of her generation. Her three autobiographical novels, Annie John, Lucy, and Autobiography of My Mother, and collection of short stories, At the Bottom of the River, touch on the universal theme of coming-of-age and the female adolescent's need to sever her ties to her mother. This angst is couched in the social landscape of post-colonial Antigua, a small Caribbean island whose legacy of racism affects Kincaid's protagonists. Her fiction rewrites the history of the Caribbean from a West Indies perspective and this milieu colors the experiences of her characters.

Following a biographical chapter, Paravisini-Gebert traces the development of Kincaid's craft as a writer. Each of the novels and the collection of short stories is discussed in a separate chapter that includes sections on plot, character, theme, and an alternate critical approach from which to read the novel, such as feminist. A complete primary and secondary bibliography and lists of selected reviews of Kincaid's work complete the study.
