Gibson probes underworld England.

This is no dried scholarly book. It seethes with humour and provides insight into an area little covered because of the immense amount of research it requires. One particularly fascinating aspect is Gibson's research into the correspondence columns in the periodicals of Victorian England. He uncovered a phemonemon of immense interest to social historians: the sub-pornographic letters which appeared in the genteel women's magazines. I agree with Dr. Ridding, I return again and again to Gibson's book because here are facts so difficult to find and so illuminating of a sub-culture.

The Value of Species

Should you be more amateur-naturalist than philosopher-conservationist-lawyer, you'll prefer McCord's article in the Spring 2013 issue of National Parks Magazine; but should you desire a more erudite argument, read the book, twice! The article uses Yellowstone's pronghorn to suggest that all species have value in and of themselves. The book does not. It is an insightful, intellectual, well-reasoned and convincing view of a new, and different, way to understand the value of nonhuman species. This is an analysis of the threats and challenges we face, as thinkers, should we take up the question of whether or not to value other species. I'm not a public policy maker, but if I loved one, I'd send him/her my copy of this book.

Interesting Observations in The Value of Species

Prof. McCord has set forth some stimulating observations about evolution and the reasons to protect species of every variety, e.g., he points out that all of us living creatures (including plants) have evolved from a common ancestor--the first life on the planet. While the thought goes back to Darwin and others, McCord reminds us again that our family tree ties all species together. Every existing species is fascinating in presenting a different and successful way of coping with the environment of earth and all are worth studying, even as some may not seem to have much "value" to humans.

Another interesting contribution is his analysis of the domination of our international monetary systems and the way in which virtually every resource and human value tends increasingly to be monetized. This is not a happy situation for the earth or for humans; his book helps one keep in mind the need to preserve other values. The book is definitely worth reading. Thank you, Professor McCord.

A thoughtful and thought-provoking book

Mr. McCord's rigorous analysis, skillfully structured argument, and eminently readable prose lead inexorably to a conclusion both intellectually pure and verging on the spiritual: that which lends our own species value is what demands we value others. As much about "us" as it is about "them," the book is an easily absorbed reminder that curiosity and wonder are a critical, if not the distinguishing, characteristic of humanity, and that every form of life is valuable for the simple reason that it is "wondrous."

Very interesting and well researched

In what reads like a combination of research paper and super-lengthy blog post, Zuckerman presents a very convincing case that religion is unnecessary for a society to prosper.

It's important to note that the book's hypothesis is not "secularism makes societies BETTER" but rather "lack of religion does NOT make societies fail." To this end, Zuckerman interviews 149 semi-randomly selected people from Denmark & Sweden, while living there for 14 months. The general consensus is that religion is mostly a non-issue for people. Some believe, most don't, but nearly all really just *don't care*.

As for the support for his research hypothesis, one need look no further than the UN statistics on where Scandinavian countries place in terms of happiness, health, crime, poverty, etc. (hint: they do very well in all categories, significantly better than the US in most) The author does a good job of illustrating his personal experience while living there, as how it compares to living in northern California.

If I could, I would give it 4.5 stars. The only reason I don't give it 5 is because at times, it feels a little bit too much like a research paper. At a mere 183 pages, it is a quick read; but there were a couple moments when it felt like the pacing was lacking. In spite of that, it is definitely worth reading; I highly recommend for anyone interested in socio-religious issues (whether a believer or a non-believer or a fence-walker).
