True Life

Nick Enright is a brilliant playwright & his play, "Blackrock", is both captivating and well written. The most amazing aspect of this play, is that it is based on the truth!
The story of "Blackrock" recounts an actual event, which occured in Australia to a young girl. Enright wrote the play (which was not originally called "Blackrock") to help the community deal with the girl's death. The Department of Eduction also used that original play as a Theatre in Education text which was studied throughout Australian High Schools.
The play's name was changed to "Blackrock", when the movie was made. The reasons being; so that the title would 'sell' to the public and so that anonimity was provided to the people & place where the real event took place.

Couldn't put it down!

This was an amazing screenplay! I am a fan of Heath Ledger the actor who plays Toby in Blackrock so that was my first reason for buying the book but I am glad I did! You should definatly get this! I could not put it down! Its got everything! Sex, drugs, friendship, betrayal, surfing, murders, suicide, rape, cops...! Very serious issues and a very awesome book!

Blackrock

Blackrock was inspired by the rape and murder of 14-year old Leigh Leigh near Newcastle, Australia, back in 1989, and as such the play has always been controversial for many different reasons. The story centres upon Jared (Laurence Breuls), the 17-year old surfer who, during a beachside party, witnessed a rape (not Toby, played by the now famous Heath Ledger, who was the lead rapist) and did nothing about it. As the crime drew the suspicion of a nation, Jared was forced to choose between telling the truth and 'mateship' with the rapists and especially the killer, Ricko (Simon Lyndon).
The characters are well portrayed in the screenplay, and the movie itself is even more powerful and gripping. A warning: the movie has a rape scene which you will find very disturbing...

About the Author
Dr. Michelle "Shelley" McGuire teaches in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Washington State University. She is the author of several published articles, and specializes in the research of understanding of how breastfeeding and lactation influence both maternal and child health and well-being. Recent research has focused on investigating how maternal diet influences milk fat content and, thus, energy intake and fatty acid consumption of the breastfeeding child. Dr. McGuire has been teaching the basic nutrition course for several years and has a strong appreciation of the course, its goals and objectives, and the variety of student needs. This experience coupled with her strong writing and research background has helped her create an exciting and refreshing text for the introductory nutrition course.

Dr. Beerman teaches in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Washington State University. The author of several published articles, she specializes in research focusing on dietary practices of college students and the effects of isoflavones on health parameters in postmenopausal women. Dr. Beerman also has published several articles accessing the effectiveness of computer technology in the college classroom. Dr. Beerman teaches the introductory nutrition course for health majors, as well as courses in nutrition education, life cycle nutrition, and pathophysiology. Since joining the faculty at Washington State University in 1989, she has taught more than 10,000 students and has been the recipient of several teaching awards. Dr. Beerman's years of teaching experience, combined with her wide knowledge base in nutrition and health sciences, has helped create this innovative introductory nutrition text.

This book is very informative, easy to read, and an overall good source to have for Nutrition majors, or those interested in studying the subject. The layout is organized with many diagrams, graphs and tables which help out a lot.

Book gives a good overview of the science behind nutrition. Way better then other books I have purchased. Contains interesting case studies that allow one to read about how nutritional intervention can help and also how nutrition plays into many diseases/conditions. Wasn't too difficult to read, lots of pictures definitely helped. Overall, an excellent introductory text to nutritional science.

I bought this book for class and I would say it really helps a lot in a way that it gives more explanations and more details about things that are not discussed in class. Because usually teachers do require reading and details that are not covered in class would still be on the test. And, some teachers do not explain some things very well, so reading this book helps in understanding the theory.

She ignores all of the warning signs, choosing Malik over her friends when they try to warn her against him. Kennedy is a Black girl from the suburbs who is bored and looking for some fun in the hood. She ends of finding exactly what she's looking for and more. Kennedy was so naïve that she came across as stupid. Poor thing learned her lesson the hard way. This is a great choice for a teenage discussion group.

About the Author

Chetan Bhagat is the author of seven blockbuster books. These include six novels—Five Point Someone (2004), One Night @ the Call Center (2005), The 3 Mistakes of My Life (2008), 2 States (2009), Revolution 2020 (2011), Half Girlfriend (2014)—and the non-fiction title What Young India Wants (2012). Great story & fun read

I picked up this book while in India and quickly realized that I couldn't put it down. It is the story of three friends who are at IIT Delhi...who are all below average (five point something on a 10-pt GPA scale). They quickly bond after getting hazed (called ragging) and embark on a series of adventures involving life around Delhi, girls, and how to beat the IIT system before it beats them. A great read even if you didn't go to IIT Delhi!

Certified and approved - Authentic IIT

My first reservation when I picked up this book was whether the story and characters would be true to life on an IIT campus. My second reservation (having read a random page from the book) was whether I would be able to remain patient through the casual and colloquial writing style. The book well exceeded my expectations on both fronts. The characterization and writing style turned out to be strengths of the book.

What happens when you put together hundreds of completely different people who only have one thing in common - they have all mindlessly and goallessly topped their way through school to now live together away from their controlled environment for the first time. The sudden realization of mediocrity and the sudden freedom to choose how to live ones life brings out the best and worst in people. Reminiscing about life at IIT is most often about those stories about the bests and worsts of those people. This is one such story.

It is hard to guess if non-IITians would enjoy this book. Though, I can certainly say that all IIT undergrads who lived on campus would find it a thoroughly enjoyable read. The book is a shockingly honest narrative written by a guy with a unique sense of humor that I have come to associate with fellow IITians - cynical, crass, insensitive, asocial, lateral, imaginative, visual. Quick read. Funny plot. Very nostalgic. Can't wait to see the movie!

RELAX - Its all in fun!

I am a little surprised by the harsh reviews that some people are giving this book. Granted its not exactly a masterpiece but I dont think that was ever the author's intent (if I may say so myself). Its meant to be taken lightly, a few laughs and a tickle here and there is all it warrants. I think its a fun ride and anyone who has ever been to college in India will somewhere identify with it. As far as it being on top of the bestsellers in India, well, mediocrity has never been deprived of the top shelf, be it books, movies, cricket or politics. Enjoy the book!
