So Completely Thrilled

This is a fantastic book with lots of great pictures(many full page). Of course like almost all orientalist art most of the pictures are not accurate representations of the peoples activities but the book is great for studying fashion, jewelry and architecture of that time in the Middle East(mainly late 1800's and early 1900's). The price for this book is phenomenally low for the quality of book you get. There are so many beautiful pictures I haven't even gotten to the text yet.

Wonderful little book

I have ALWAYS loved Orientalist paintings and this book is a treat. Its production values are superb and Thornton does a great job in selection and explanation of the important paintings. The thick, glossy pages bring the painting to life, while the useful glosses provide context and rich detail. My only complaint is the size of the book: it really is a TINY book size for paintings. That has probably allowed the cost to remain low, but honestly, I would pay another $ 10/15 if it meant the book would be bigger, and I can see the detail of the paintings more clearly and vibrantly.

Overall, highly recommended!

Although the size of this book is a bit bigger than a regular paperback, it has far more paintings of orientalist style of women than any other book i've seen; the reproductions are excellent and the smaller size (smaller than a regular art book) does not diminise the value. the organization by theme is nice too. this is essential for anyone interested in orientalist art or any artist who likes drawing the female form.

About the Author

Albert Valdman earned a B.A. in Romance languages at the University of Pennsylvnia and a   Ph.D. in French linguistics from Cornell University. He started his career at the Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. Department of State and at the Pennsylvania State University before joining Indiana University, where  he is Rudy Professor of French/Italian and Linguistics emeritus, director of the Creole Institute and editor of Studies in Second Language Acquisition. At Indiana University, he directed the program of elementary and intermediate French, including the mentoring of graduate student instructors and coordinators. A constant in his career has been his interest in developing more effective approaches to the teaching of foreign languages, the training of teachers, and the preparation of pedagogical materials. Valdman held the posts of president of the AATF and of the International Association of Applied Linguistics. For his commitment to the teaching of French language and culture and his pioneering work in the description of French in the United States, he was named Commandeur dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques of France, member of l’Ordre des Francophones d’Amérique of the government of Quebec province, and awarded the Médaille d’Or du  mérite francophone by Renaissance française.  His work in Haitian Studies and creole linguistics was recognized by Life Time Achievement Awards from the Haitian Studies Association and the Society for Pidgin and Creole Linguistics.

 

Cathy Pons completed a B.A. in French at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, she spent a year in France as a Fulbright Teaching Assistant. Pons completed her doctorate in French linguistics at Indiana University where, as an Assistant Professor, she directed the elementary French program and the MA in French instruction. Teaching at the University of North Carolina at Asheville since 1995, Pons is Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages. In addition to teaching courses in French language, culture, and linguistics, Pons teaches K-12 methods courses for licensure candidates in Chinese, French, German, Latin, and Spanish. She is past president of the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina and has received numerous grants in support of study abroad programs for students and faculty. With more than thirty years’ experience in elementary French teaching and teacher preparation, Pons finds the classroom to be a stimulating environment.

 

Mary Ellen Scullen  completed her B.A. in French at Kalamazoo College in Michigan, she went to Tours, France to be a French government sponsored teaching assistant for one year. Three years later, Scullen returned to the U.S. with a Licence de Lettres modernes, mention Français Langue Étrangère and a Maîtrise de Français Langue Étrangère from Université François Rabelais in Tours. Scullen earned a joint Ph.D. in French Linguistics and Theoretical Linguistics from Indiana University in 1993. Scullen has taught French language, culture, and linguistics, coordinated the basic French language program, and supervised teaching assistants at the University of Louisville and, since 1998, at the University of Maryland, College Park. She also had the opportunity to teach French in southern Africa at the University of Malawi from 1995—1997 and to serve as the Resident Director for the Maryland-in-Nice program in Nice, France from 2002—2003. In 2005, she was named Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes académiques of France. For the past several years, Scullen has been involved in training new teaching assistants not only in French, but also in Spanish, German, Hebrew, Chinese, Russian, and Japanese. She finds working with new teaching assistants to be highly rewardingand she truly loves being in the classroom with first year students.

ALERT TO STUDENTS!

For students needing this textbook for a class that uses the MyFrenchLab, DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK! I bought this book new from Amazon specifically because it was advertised as the MyFrenchLab edition. However, I found that it does not provide an access code for logging onto the MyFrenchLab website. I will have to either purchase an access code on the Pearson website for $88 or get a new book at my university's bookstore for about $180. That puts the cost of the textbook at over $200, more than a new one would have cost at my university's overpriced bookstore!

While this textbook references the MyFrenchLab resources provided online, it is not a full package. You will have to purchase MyFrenchLab separately. I recommend either you buy this book used for a much lower price and buy the access code on the Pearson website or go ahead and buy it new. Don't get ripped off.

The book is great.....BUT:

This book is great! However, be aware that this textbook requires ONLINE coursework! You need to purchase a separate membership through the publisher if the textbook you purchase online doesn't have the membership code included. I ended up getting a great deal on my textbook, compared to the campus bookstore price, only to find out in class that I needed to purchase the membership code, too. I ended up paying the same price for the book and the code together, that I would have paid at the campus bookstore in one purchase anyway.

Book is easy to follow with vocabulary at the end of each section. There are not many changes from the 3rd Edition. Different verbs and vocabulary are introduced in each lesson with exercises to work on in a class setting or as homework. This edition will cover several levels of French.

Great Results!!!

I used this book as my primary study guide for the HOAE. I went through the book and took notes on index cards, then studied the index cards whenever I had a spare moment. I worked through all the examples in the book, I took and re-took the extensive sample test and reviewed my answers in detail. Then I repeated the process. The information in this study guide was well organized and well presented - the heart anatomy page alone was worth the price! This study guide is comprehensive - but you won't be overwhelmed by details. It is very user friendly and manageable. If you only buy one study guide for the HOAE - make it this one. And if you make it your business to learn the information presented in this book then you will do really really well on the exam. I got great results - I got the maximum score possible for this test - and I couldn't have done it without this study guide!

Great study book!

This book has a lot of information that is very useful for the HOAE test. I took the exam today and scored excellent on the test...and I am from GA. I saw where someone had posted that it did not help them and they were from GA. Would highly recommend this book!

According to this droll mock-biography, whimsically set in the 1780s, would-be aviator Captain Arsenio "had little knowledge of physics or mechanics,... he demonstrated great patience and determination" in his quest for flight. Mixed-media collages picture Arsenio with an egg-shaped head and toothy underbite, dressed in a thin leather helmet, slack gray coat and patched olive-drab pants; his sepia-inked sketchbook mimics Leonardo da Vinci's. The narration alternates between a deadpan retrospective voice ("He placed so much emphasis on getting off the ground that he forgot... how to keep himself in the air") and excerpts from Arsenio's gung-ho Flight Diary: "Running + wings = access to heaven. It cannot fail!" The book recalls six doomed experiments; from the Motocanary ("If I concentrate enough birds together, the sustaining force will help me win the clouds. It cannot fail!") to the wooden, hydrogen-powered Aerial Submarine ("I'm still climbing upward, but I can smell something burning"). Argentinian author-artist Bernasconi, a pilot himself, creates multi-stage diagrams to document Arsenio's flights, from takeoff to ascent to maximum height and crash-landing. The reiterated "It cannot fail!" and slapstick outcomes yield a cumulative hilarity, and the Captain's quixotic optimism is endearingly loony. Grade 3-5-Bernasconi documents the exploits of an imaginary 18th-century experimental aviator, Captain Arsenio, explaining that the book's diagrams and quotations have been extracted from the inventor's diary. Six failed attempts to fly are described, including such innovations as the bird-powered Motocanary and the highly combustible Aerial Submarine. Each contraption is introduced with a brief paragraph of text, a large illustration, and a quotation. On the following spread, in a "Flight Diary," Arsenio details step by step how he operates that particular machine, becomes briefly airborne, and then inevitably falls to the ground. The collage artwork, which incorporates mostly metallic found objects such as springs and spoked wheels, features the determined but hapless adventurer rising and crashing in one spectacular disaster after another. Undaunted, he continues to proclaim that his next attempt "cannot fail." Rube Goldberg fanciers may be intrigued by these attempts and might even be inspired to sketch some of their own alternatives. Sublimely ridiculous

Want to make a kid laugh? Read this book together. To quote the amazing and amazingly inept (though highly persistent) Captain Arsenio, "It cannot fail!" 18th century aeronaut-wannabe, Captain Arsenio, gives us a wonderful first-hand view of his inventions and logic. Quirky art and a slapstick sense of humor with a dry, yet over the top, delivery makes for a great story that stands up well to multiple readings.

The delightful inventions and (mis)adventures of Captain Arsenio

Leonardo da Vinci has nothing on Captain Arsenio, a retired cheese maker, blacksmith, scuba diver, and ship captain turned inventor, who decided one day in 1782 to build a flying machine. Captain Arsenio was a curious man who liked to tinker and explore, and the fact that he worked with a hodgepodge of materials and was totally unaware of the laws of physics were not account to get in the way of a man who sets off to fly with the birds (in spite of himself). In this delightful book we learn about his long series of eccentric projects in this quest.

"Captain Arsenio: Inventions and (Mis)adventures in Flight" by Pablo Bernasconi purports to be based on pages from the recently discovered of Captain Manual J. Arsenio, in which were recorded his many failed attempts to create a flying machine. Of course, this is all fiction, which probably explains why it the book ends up being so much fun. Bernasconi tells Arsenio's story, starting in the 1780s with the Motocanary and the Flying Runner, then progressing to the Corkscrewpterus, Aerial Submarine, Illusion Burner, and Hamstertronic. These are six of his eighteen most influential projects that have contributed to modern aviation by virtue of teaching that most valuable of lessons, "Don't try this at home." For each of his flying machines we have the details of the project (e.g., the Motocanary involves tying sixteen canaries to a belt), including diagrams and sketches, followed by Arsenio's Flight Diary which details the specific phases of the attempt and the lessons learned (e.g., choose more obedient bird, test the design in a field without any trees, etc.).

Bernasconi's artwork consists of collaged original art and found objects, and if it does not remind you of a cross between Rube Goldberg's inventions and Terry Gilliam's animation for Monty Python, then you are a whole lot younger than I am. Young readers will be delighted by the (mis)adventures of Captain Arsenio and captivated by the various designs and Beransconi's artistic renderings of them. He even tries to answer the big question (Did Arsenio eventually succeed in flying?) and while a sequel might be possible given the other twelve designs left unexplored, I doubt we will be that lucky. The copyright page for this book appears in the back instead of the front and I think this was done so that we could better appreciate the dedication to Bernasconi's father, who taught him to fly, and his mother, who taught him to land when he was growing up in Argentina. Captain Arsenio must have been that lucky as well.
