Markets of Dispossession is a theoretically sophisticated and sobering account of the consequences of these initiatives.

Julia Elyachar studied the efforts of bankers, social scientists, ngo members, development workers, and state officials to turn the craftsmen and unemployed youth of Cairo into the vanguard of a new market society based on microenterprise. She considers these efforts in relation to the alternative notions of economic success held by craftsmen in Cairo, in which short-term financial profit is not always highly valued. Through her careful ethnography of workshop life, Elyachar explains how the traditional market practices of craftsmen are among the most vibrant modes of market life in Egypt. Long condemned as backward, these existing market practices have been seized on by social scientists and development institutions as the raw materials for experiments in “free market” expansion. Elyachar argues that the new economic value accorded to the cultural resources and social networks of the poor has fueled a broader process leading to their economic, social, and cultural dispossession.

Prime Harmonica

Dave Gage's book, "Harmonica Beginners" seems to be an excellent reference source for a starting player. Mr. Gage got me, a beginner, playing in short order. He takes much of the mystery out of the harmonica with basic but detailed techniques and tips that are well explained and organized. A nice feature that Mr. Gage added for the purchaser of this book, is a free 3 month "mini membership" to his online harmonicalessons.com website that contain audio and video files which enhance his instructions. Best of all, Dave Gage stresses having fun with the harmonica and playing some music.

About the Author

Ernst-August Gutt and his wife Eva joined SIL in 1970 and were involved in a translation project in Ethiopia. He completed his M.A. studies in linguistics at University College London (UCL) in 1983. From 1974 until 1996, he worked as translation advisor, linguistic researcher, and administrator in Ethiopia, specializing on Silt'e, an Ethio-Semitic language. He pioneered the application of the relevance theory of communication to translation, for which he received a Ph.D. from UCL in 1989. Since 1998 he has been carrying out a research program for SIL International into foundational notions of translation. He has been Honorary Reader at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and Honorary Senior Research Fellow of UCL. He has authored several books on his research on the cognitive foundations of translation. Besides this research, Ernst-August is also Translation and Linguistic Consultant for the Ethiopia Branch and an International Translation Consultant.

A Good Read but has some Minor Issues

This book is probably self-published. It is rife with errors in grammar, spelling, and diction. It is approximately 133-pages in length; however, it is printed using a 14-point (or larger) font. The code examples are written using C++ and are of a more "normal" font size (10 or 11-point).

It's a good book if the reader can get past the grammar and spelling errors. The author does a good job of finding that *break* where procedure driven programming and Object Oriented programming differ. The book also has links to the author's blog, which contain more programming examples to help those trying to understand OOP.

I purchased this book as a means to understand OOP as my strengths like in procedure driven languages (Cobol, Natural). I've done Visual Basic development for six years; however, there's still that gray area where OOP throws me for a loop. The author does a good job of explaining tables along with a consistent example building on a first timer coder's logic and building on that logic to an efficient block of code.

This book is a good purchase (for the price) for the first timer to Object Oriented Programming. No prior programming experience is needed, but like any other learning process, it helps if the student has tools with which to practice (i.e. a computer and the language engine).

SOLID book

Get it? Anyway...I am a layman, new to all programming. In an effort to better understand OOP, I got this book among others. Overall, it contributed to the necessary 'additive' learning structure that multiple books/voices/opinions provides. This will take you no time to read, and it may cover things you already know, but learning is about repetition and seeing all angles. If you want to learn or continue learning basic concepts of OOP, get this book AND MANY MORE! Besides, it's certainly inexpensive.

Very helpful

This quick read was just what I needed. I've been away from the development world for a while and I needed a quick study of basic OOP principles before diving into learning Swift. Despite a number of simple typos throughout the book, the author did a great job of explaining the key concepts of the paradigm.

A Good Translation

I recently came across this book and I am very pleased to have read it. Archana Venkatesan had done a wonderful rendering of this masterpiece, which is one of the greatest works in Tamil. A devotional poetry written eleven centuries ago has found its way into the 21st century for the modern audience. I am happy and I highly appreciate this work. I hope Archana takes a stand to transalate the works of Thiru. Jnana Sambandhar, Appar, Manickavasagar and Sundaramorthy Nayanars as well. They will bring great glory and benifit to the entire humanity.

In this new book Henrietta Moore examines the nature and limitations of the theoretical languages used by anthropologists and others to write about sex, gender and sexuality.

Moore begins by discussing recent feminist debates on the body and the notion of the non-universal human subject. She then considers why anthropologists have contributed relatively little to these debates, and suggests that this has much to do with the history of anthropological thought with regard to the conceptualization of "persons" and "selves" cross-culturally. Moore develops a specific anthropological approach to feminist post-structuralist and psychoanalytic theory.

In subsequent chapters Moore pursues a series of related themes including the links between gender, identity and violence; questions of gender and identity in the context of intra-household resource allocation; the construction of domestic space and its relationship to bodily practices and the internationalization of relations of difference; and the links between the gender of the anthropologist and the writing of anthropology.

This volume demonstrates anthropology's contribution to current debates in feminist theory.

LOVE THIS BOOK

This was a PLEASURE to read! I picked up this book thinking it will be just another romance book to read during my free time, only to get sucked into the characters, the plot line, the development, etc. I actually LOVE the heroine and hero! They all have their vices, their issues, and their positives, but WOW! This was truly a pleasing experience. The plot line was so well developed that I actually felt a strong connection to the heroine and had CRIED in certain parts of the book! If you have time, I RECOMMEND YOU PICK UP THIS BOOK! It is well worth it!

This heroine was treated like a piece of trash. The hero shows no valid remorse for his actions. As far as I am concerned , there is no way she should take him back.
