This book puts it in proper perspective on how we as New Creations in Christ Jesus should respond to God's ability concerning civil authorities and man's government as well as our mission and mandate among and in it. While we are IN the world, we are NOT OF IT as Apostle Don surely demonstrates through the revelation he has received. I gave it only 4 stars because it was short and I felt that there was much more that Don could have touch on for further discussions among the Body of Christ.

Eudora Welty (1909-2001) was born in Jackson, Mississippi. She worked as a photographer during the Depression and published her first book, a collection of short stories, in 1941. In addition to short fiction, Welty wrote novels, novellas, essays, and reviews, and was the winner of both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. By the time of her death in 2001, Welty had established herself as one of the most important and beloved American writers of the twentieth century.

About the Author
EUDORA WELTY (1909-2001) was born in Jackson, Mississippi, and attended the Mississippi State College for Women, the University of Wisconsin, and Columbia University (where she studied advertising). In addition to short fiction, Welty wrote novels, novellas, essays, and reviews, and was the winner of both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize.

Like being a member of the family

Reading "Delta Wedding" is like attending a family wedding and meeting all your distant relatives for the first time. You have a sense of belonging and, at the same time, a sense of being an outsider. Everyone seems to know everyone so much better than you do and you're rushing to catch up on everyone's story and sort out who is who. This is a relatively short book, but perhaps because she is primarily a short-story writer, Eudora Welty has packed this book so densely with character and detail, you will feel as though you have read a family saga of many hundred pages. The delta is recreated in such detail that you can feel the humid, misty breezes and hear the crickets chirping. The young girls through whose perspective you watch the proceedings are enchanting. Struggling to keep track of the characters forced me to go back and re-read parts of the book at times, which was, in fact, helpful in discovering important overlooked details. This is a book you can re-read many times always discovering something or someone new. Eudora Welty ranks at the very top of Southern writers and American writers in general.

Alienation in a large family

When you see the title "Delta Wedding," please don't assume that Eudora Welty's novel is either a gaudy supermarket romance or a pollyanna tribute to nuptial celebration and Southern domesticity. It is about the events leading up to a wedding, and of course there is plenty of talk about dresses and cooking and dancing, but Welty, almost like Virginia Woolf's American counterpart, suffuses the atmosphere with mysterious psychological undercurrents and the foreboding aura of secrecy. We get the sense that there is more to these people's personalities than the text can convey, and we read on patiently and attentively, hoping to unravel the complexities.

The setting is the area of central Mississippi through which the Yazoo River flows, not far from Faulkner country geographically or literarily; much of the land in this particular locality is owned by a family named the Fairchilds, the dynastic centerpiece of the story. The prevalent symbol in the novel is a train called the Yellow Dog, the principal means of mass transportation that connects this part of Mississippi to the rest of the state. This is the train that brings nine-year-old Laura McRaven from Jackson to visit the Fairchilds, her cousins, on their plantation, where Dabney (that's a girl) Fairchild is engaged to be married within the week to a man twice her age named Troy Flavin.

It is also the train that, not long before the novel begins, nearly ran over Laura's uncle George as he tried to rescue his addled niece Maureen who had caught her foot in a trestle. George's wife Robbie had witnessed this near-accident and now is using it as an excuse to leave him--how could he be so selfish as to risk his life and widow her? Although this does not speak well of Robbie's character, the source of her discontent is really alienation. She knows that she is beneath George's station, and every instance in which he bonds with another Fairchild only affirms that the Fairchild mystique is a closed circle, impenetrable to her.

For a novel concerned about a wedding in the immediate present, it is deeply immersed in its characters' pasts. Laura is an only child whose mother has recently passed away, so this large house where she is surrounded by myriad cousins, aunts, and uncles, like legendary creatures whose fantastic world she has suddenly entered, is an awesome environment with a rich and intricate history. The Fairchilds are such a regional monument that the entire town cemetery is practically their very own mausoleum; Dr. Murdoch, the insensitive local physician, picks out future burial plots for Fairchilds as though he were deciding where to plant flowers in a garden.

One interesting characteristic of "Delta Wedding" is that, true to impressionistic storytelling, there is no traditional protagonist that I could identify. Laura receives much of the focus, but this is not really her story, nor is it narrated in her voice. Dabney is too shallow and spoiled to be a heroine; her older sister Shelley, a smarter and more serious girl, is not interested in being a heroine, and good for her. "Delta Wedding" does well without a hero because it is realistic fiction at its most crystalline; a sincere, authentic depiction of life in the rural deep South of the 1920s which shows a part of the country modernizing to the twentieth century even while clinging to the shadows of the past.

As a lifelong Southern girl, I find that there are three authors who can fully unveil the truth about the south: Shelby Foote, William Faulkner, and Miss Eudora Welty. This book beautifully tells the story of Laura McRaven, a young girl visiting her deceased mother's family in the Mississippi delta, ostensibly to attend Cousin Dabney's wedding. Miss Welty has a true gift for evoking the smells, tastes, and sounds of the rural south. You will feel that you have spent the summer with the Fairchild clan. Not to be missed as a benchmark in southern literature. Yankees will vow to move south.

About the Author

Jay McGavren was doing automation for a hotel services company when a colleague introduced him to Programming Perl (a.k.a. the Camel Book). It made him an instant Perl convert, as he liked actually writing code instead of waiting for a 10-person development team to configure a build system. It also gave him the crazy idea to write a technical book someday.

In 2007, with Perl sputtering, Jay was looking for a new interpreted language. With its strong object-orientation, excellent library support, and incredible flexibility, Ruby immediately won him over. He's since used Ruby for two game libraries, a generative art project, in support of a Java development job, and as a Ruby on Railsfreelancer. He's been using Rails in the online developer education space since 2011.

I am a Software Engineer with over 15 years in the industry. I use ruby professionally on a daily basis, and am Team Lead for a large project written in Ruby. As such I am always looking for good training material for Jr Engineers and new team members-- having had good luck with Head First books before I picked up "Head First Ruby".

I'm happy to say this book continues in the grand tradition of the Head First series and provides a clear, easy and precise introduction to Ruby, and I think is the easiest way to get "up and running" with Ruby. TAKE THE TIME TO DO THE EXERCISES. They are silly but you will learn.

A great book for newbies to Ruby. It explains the _why_ and not just the _what_.

This book is fantastic! It is the perfect book for someone who wants to learn Ruby, and has never programmed before. I would say that minor Terminal command line usage can be helpful, but not strictly necessary. This book starts at the very beginning, and teaches the _why_ to code a certain way, and not just the _what_. The author will present one way to do something, and then will follow with why to do it another better way, so that you get the big picture of _why_ it's the better way. I also think that this book does a great job at explaining references to Objects and the Heap to newbies. Such a normally confusing subject is just presented so well (a difficulty that I would assume is kind of metaphorically analogous to pointers in C for newbies). I also love the last couple of chapters where you make a _real_ Sinatra web app. This rocks, it takes a complete newbie to an entry level coder doing a simple Sinatra app. The book also has a homepage (in-progress, but the book is only recently published). I am also critical of a couple of other books in this series, but this one is good. I do wish he could write a sequel to this book, but alas you can only publish so much in a series. I do wish it covered concurrency, which was missing, but it really does a good job with everything it does cover. So it's a great introduction to Ruby to prepare readers for books like The Well Grounded Rubyist,[...] and Eloquent Ruby kinds of books. The style is fun and cool. As of the date of this posting Wed 2016.05.18, this book is up-to-date, and all exercises work on a recent modern Ruby. Thanks!

Perfect for the beginning to intermediate student of Ruby

When I first learned Java some years ago Head First Java was where I got started. (I had tried Thinking in Java, which is a great book, but it's not all that accessible for beginners.) I'm learning Ruby, obviously, and once again I've found this book to be a great starting point. When I say it's a great first book I don't mean that the code you learn is overly simplified or trivial, but these guys make it easy to take the plunge. You still have to swim. One thing I particularly like is the way it emphasizes differences between Ruby and older languages that have what I'll call a C-like syntax. As many of the basic code structures are similar throughout that family of languages, zeroing in on the contrasts saved me a lot of confusion. Amazon happened to offer me this review copy shortly after I learned that our shop was turning toward Ruby for an upcoming project so that was my good luck, but even if I'd paid for the book I'd still be in love with it. I'm only halfway through but I'm writing solid code for moderately complex applications. I seriously could not recommend this more highly for a beginner. If anyone knows of the best more advanced book I'd appreciate it if you left it's title as a comment.

Great tool for pricers!

I was a cost estimator by trade and training. This is one of the few text books I've found that has a lot of real-world application and value. If your business requires that you prepare detailed, auditable proposals with solid 'Bases of Estimates,' this is a good book for your library.

A good first book on the subject although it contains errors.

I am in the CMA program however a large part of my work involves manufacturing cost estimation. I thought I would buy this book to learn a little more. If you are new to cost estimating I recommend this book as a good first step to use as an overview of the process. If you have studied cost accounting to any degree it may not be worthwhile as it is a rehash of things you probably already know.

One error (pg 150) is disturbing to me from an author that is discussing cost estimation. He used the term "Profit margin" when giving an example of "Markup". This is accounting 101 stuff and the fact that an authority on cost estimation would make such a basic mistake like that is odd.

He claims a product that cost 10,000 dollars with a 20% profit margin would sell for 12,000 dollars. Profit margin = ((Selling price - cost)/selling price)X100.
((12,000 - 10,000)/12,000)x100 = 16.67%

This is so simple to verify if just looking at cost. A product that cost 10,000 dollars with a desired profit margin of 20% could be figured as cost/(1-profit margin) or 10,000/(1-.2)= 12,500 dollars.

What he used was markup-
COST x MARKUP PERCENTAGE = MARKUP AMOUNT

COST + MARKUP AMOUNT = SELLING PRICE

Good basic, some material is out of date, mistakes in exercises

This book costs *way* too much. Its apparently still the "go to" book for cost estimating, even though it was published quite a while ago. Several chapters near the end talk about software cost estimating using material that is now so old as to be useless. Apparently the basic approach to cost estimating hasn't changed much since the book was published, nor have the financial analysis approaches. There are far more mistakes in the exercises in the book than one would expect. Having said all that, it was the required text for a class in cost estimating, so I bought it, read it, and will probably keep it around to use in the future. I'm glad I was able to get it used but in great condition, as it meant I paid only about $65 for it instead of the $140 or so asking price new.

An interesting and thought provoking read

This book does a number of things very well. It serves as an introduction to the philosophy of religion that covers a significant amount of territory while at the same time dealing with issues in some depth. While it does introduce the reader to issues and arguments, it is challenging without being impenetrable and accessible without insulting the reader's intelligence. If you work through this book (something that is easy to do, by the way, because the dialogues are fun to read), you come to see how things look from very different perspectives. If you want to know why reasonable and thoughtful people come to believe that God exists, this book shows that it is not just by some "leap of faith" that you can end up a believer. There are rational arguments for God's existence. Are they successful? It is hard to say. The atheists and agnostics get to offer their responses and the reader can decide who has the upper hand in this debate. The authors show that there is a difference between atheism and "new atheism". If you want to know why some reasonable and thoughtful people believe there is no God, you can see that there are actual reasons that could lead someone to conclude that there is no God. It's nice to see atheism get a fair hearing and atheistic arguments offered that show that there is more to the atheist's perspective than is captured in Hitchens or Harris. There is also a nice discussion of the significance of religious belief (or lack thereof) in a person's life.

While this book is written by philosophers, I imagine that non-philosophers will really enjoy this book. It would make an excellent gift for the literate theist, atheist, or agnostic in your life.

excellent introduction to philosophy of religion

I use The God Dialogues in my Introduction to Philosophy course at the University of Southern Miss' (along with Plato's Five Dialogues, Descartes's Meditations, another introductory book on free will, and various other readings). This book is an excellent introduction to the major philosophical arguments for and against the existence of God. It is perfect for an Introduction to Philosophy course, or as supplementary text for an undergraduate course on Philosophy of Religion, or simply as a fun read for anyone who wants to survey philosophical work on the issue without reading the original texts (which can be tedious, highly technical, and dry). I would even recommend the book for serious philosophy students or professional philosophers (like myself) with little or no background in philosophy of religion. It only took me a few days to read, and I feel that I have gained a good grasp on the basic issues and arguments.

The book is written as a series of nine dialogue between three characters--a Christian, an atheist, and an agnostic--taking place during a long road trip. All of the major arguments for and against the existence of God are clearly and fairly explained, assessed and critiqued, including the design argument, the cosmological argument, the ontological argument, the problem of evil, Pascal's wager, and the appeal to religious experience. The authors manage to make the material easy to read without dumbing down the arguments, and they are fair to both sides of the debate. Most of my students, many of whom are typical southern conservative Bible-thumpers, enjoyed (or at least appreciated) the book.

The dialogue is sometimes a little stilted and the jokes can be corny. But books of this nature inevitably face a trade-off between literary style and natural sounding speech versus clarity and philosophical rigor. I think the authors make the right choice in laying out the arguments more precisely and with more detail than most people realistically would do in a friendly conversation on vacation. And the writing is still as natural and entertaining as can be expected given the priority of content over style.
