Beautiful, bleak and hopeful impressions of Pennsylvania life

This is a wonderful collection of poems. Many of the pieces capture a snapshot of rural life - the beauty and drama of a flock of geese or a rumbling train that embroider an otherwise peaceful but monotonous, and at times even empty, life: "and you splinter in the reflected gleam/ and find yourself within caverns/ you thought lost long ago."

As you move through the book, you peer more into the author's internal world. There are moments of longing for adventure and drama, and then of aching for comfort and home. There is a steady balance between the bleak and the beautiful that reminded me of Gerald Stern, the Pittsburgh-born poet. Pennsylvanians--really all rural and suburban Americans--will see themselves in this book.

The collection seems to move chronologically, and alters course unexpectedly when the author faces a deadly cancer diagnosis. You should experience the book for yourself to glimpse how this colors his outlook from the vantage point of a Pennsylvania window. I'd highly recommend this subtle, beautiful and hopeful read.

A flowing array of thought and feeling

The poetry presented in this volume is intimately honest yet spiritually grand. From the challenges of confronting a fatal diagnosis to the gratitude and ecstasy for being spared, this collection presents life that has a hint of luminosity even in its darkness. The author, a noted philosopher, manages to find connections and hidden places within and without that enlarge our sense of the day to day. Playful with both form and substance, Glen Mazis's words sometimes dance off the page, leaping directly into our imagination. As a lover of moving water I am also hypnotized by the poetry floating by in The River Bends In Time. Highly recommended.

A must read for any parent, teacher, practitioner or person experiencing anxiety, stress or just feeling odd and "not fitting in".

It has helped change my life as a parent with a child who has struggled all her life as a "highly sensitive person.": We have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on specialist, all coming up with different diagnosis, all diagreeing upon "what is wrong with my daughter," and medicating her without true understanding of her as a person, as a consequence, only worsening her condition and state of mind. This book will give you answers and just as importantly, it will give you hope. I highly recommend it to all my friends and anyone who reads this review.

SPD + Psychopathology - A Winning Combination

As a psychotherapist and an adult with SPD, I really found Heller's latest book to be especially meaningful. Few - if any - texts deal with SPD and psychopathology, which is so common - especially in adults who were diagnosed with SPD later in life. The cases she presents feel intimate, and are helpful for comparison. She also integrates some occupational therapeutic ideas and techniques, which are already proving helpful for me. An interesting read for SPDers of all ages!
