Dana J Lawrence, DC, MMedEd (Palmer College of Chiropractic) This book presents a comprehensive approach to muscle palpation and human muscular anatomy, providing an overview of stretching as well as a thorough grounding in palpatory awareness of human muscles. It is amply illustrated and is complemented by a DVD. It is designed to fill a need in the training of students of massage therapy. It focuses attention on human muscles, their anatomy, and the most effective way in which each muscle should be palpated. There is an additional emphasis on stretching and on trigger points. A book like this is needed in the discipline, and its thoroughness will be an asset in marketing to other professions in manual therapy. Overall, it does a superb job of meeting the authors' objectives. The primary audience is students in massage therapy programs, but it will also find a home in other professions which focus on manual care, such as chiropractic, naturopathy, napropathy and physical medicine. It is a book that students will embrace, but it is probably a bit basic for practitioners, although it might be a good reference for them. The first of the three main parts of the book looks at the art and science of palpation, as well as some information about stretching (from various viewpoints, such as contract relax and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation). The second part looks at bony palpation and landmarks in the body, while the final part (which is the meat of the book) provides detailed information on how to palpate all muscles of the body. It is wonderfully illustrated, with hundreds of high quality illustrations, and the accompanying DVD demonstrates many of the techniques as well. All illustrations are in color, and the text looks quite professional. My only quibble is a lack of referencing for the latter chapters, which may reflect the fact that the book represents the clinical wisdom of the authors. This is a nicely done addition to the literature. It is logically organized, it covers the material well, and I cannot think of another similar book that has this level of detail. The DVD is a good addition. There is a wealth of good clinical information here, well beyond just the palpation skills. There is good information on stretching, and on trigger points and where they may be located and how they may be palpated. a superior text... mult-purposeful... accurate... beautiful

OM massage/bodywork students, professionals and teachers
having used the old standard (TGB) to teach kinesiology, anatomy, pathology, deep tissue massage and neuromuscular therapy for years at multiple massage schools, i have been impatiently waiting for an affordable alternative. while this book lacks kinesiology fundamentals (planes, movements, etc.), it is vastly superior for learning muscles and how to specifically palapate muscles and bony landmarks. moreover, it includes theory (based on current research) on trigger points, trigger point locations, the pain referral patterns, initiating and perpetuating factors and a variety of other insightful comments on specific muscle trigger points.
this book does not replace Travell's advanced volumes, but it is much more approachable.
for the study of muscles and movement, it's incomplete, but if you can get by without the kinesiology fundamentals (as mentioned above), it does replace the old standard text (TGB) as it includes thousands of full color (not dull monochromatic) enhanced photographs and drawings, it is thoughtfully organized (not wandering hither thither and patched with blurbs here and there), includes appropriate (not misleading) palpation technique and includes accurate, current references (not using old, arcane, misleading or inaccurate terms). addtionally, muscolino includes stretches for each specific muscle, information on body mechanics, draping, and massage techniques. the Elsevier website provides further highly valuable resources for both students and teachers. finally, there are two DVDs with four hours of demonstrations.
the book can be bundled with flashcards The Muscle and Bone Palpation Manual with Trigger Points, Referral Patterns and Stretching - Text and Flashcards Package. muscolino also has a muscle and bone coloring book Musculoskeletal Anatomy Coloring Book.
the only improvement (other than providing a chapter on kinesology fundamentals) might be a spiral binding as the student/licensed practitioner will constantly be referring to it and wanting to keep it open while practicing.

All you need to know about palpation

This book combines All you need to know about: Muscle & Bone Palpation, Locating Trigger Points, and Stretching.
It shows assesment and treatment techniques, including stretching. Palpation of the bones, joints, ligaments and muscles. The muscle illustrations are great incorporating trigger points and referral points as well!
The book also contains 2 DVDs. The first DVD shows palpation on various muscles by Joe Muscolino.
Now, the second DVD is a special one, it contains presentations by some of the top names in massage therapy education, including Tom Myers, Leon Chaitow, Whitney Lowe, Ruth Werner, Benny Vaughn, Bob King, Gil Hedley, Sandy Fritz, Sandra Anderson, Judith Delany, George Kousaleos, Diana Thompson, and many more.
Each of them has a take on a muscle, how they approach it and showing their favourite techniques. This is the most unique DVD presentation on massage I have ever seen. It must take lots of effort and time to gather the top educators in this project.
The author Joe Muscolino is to be thanked and congratulated for putting this wonderful book & DVD.

Excellent anatomy book

I've been a massage therapist for 10 years, and I've taken anatomy 3 times, but I still forget the names of the muscles. I love this book because I can reference by what I'm feeling, and because it doesn't leave out the small "unimportant" muscles like a lot of other texts. The illustrations are very well done and helpful. It also has online study review materials available, which is a wonderful additional benefit.
