How are characters revealed in a narrative? What devices or strategies are used? What can we learn from reading about them? These are some of the questions that Nikolajeva attempts to answer through her exploration of "the rhetoric of character. She argues that while critics, students, and scholars often cite the use of fine characterization in evaluating a novel, there is a lack of understanding and a dearth of critical material on the process by which authors create full-bodied figures. Nikolajeva explores the many approaches to an understanding of character--as an extension of the author's life, as a creation of reader response, as metaphor, as psychological allegory--and gives examples of characters from both classic and contemporary children's literature. She discusses the difficulties inherent in many questions that teachers pose to children and points out that there are many ways to answer such questions. An unsophisticated child, for example, might name Pooh as the main character in Winnie-the-Pooh while a more sophisticated university student may see Christopher Robin, with his slow maturation through the stories, as the protagonist. While many of her references are to classic novels, the study also cites more recent authors such as Katherine Paterson and Philip Pullman. In one particularly illuminating passage discussing the concept of collective protagonists, she compares the company of travelers in The Wizard of Oz to a similar questing group in the original Star Wars film, emphasizing the use of nonhuman supporting characters in fantasy. Ultimately, she concludes that characters cannot be studied as elements isolated from the narrative in which they are found, that setting and plot do much to inform character, and that characterization must be viewed within the context of the work as a whole. Written in a scholarly style, this study will be of greatest use in academic libraries and public libraries that support courses in children's literature at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

About the Author
Maria Nikolajeva is Professor of Comparative Literature at Stockholm University in Stockholm, Sweden. She was the president of the International Research Society for Children's Literature 1993-97. She has also been member of the North American Children's Literature Association since 1985 and has served on its International Committee. In addition to being the author and editor of several books on children's literature, she is one of the senior editors of the forthcoming Oxford Encyclopedia of Children's Literature.

Edmund Dulac's Fairy Book contains 15 tales from various nations or cultures throughout the world. The tales are clever and worth a read, although I did find it to be a bit dull.

The stories would be ideal for an audience of children, though possibly slightly older ones, since some of them are long.

A Different and Interesting Selection

If you love fairy tales and are looking for a different selection from the ordinary, this book should should please. It contains 15 tales from Russia, England, Flanders, Belgium, Italy, France, Ireland, Serbia, Japan and China. While some have appeared in other forms I found it an intriguing and original selection that was very well told. Alas, there are no Dulac illustrations. Even in miniature black and white that would have been a bonus.

There are no illustrations in this digital book only bookmarks where an illustration should have been. Also the publisher, Library of Alexandria, states in the description that there is an interactive table of contents and this is not true. I was disappointed in this purchase. Gave it 3 stars for the stories though I have not read them yet.

One of the better methods, but not great

The material is solid, the explanation are clear, even if overly pedantic. Overdubbed scenes in the DVD are very amateurish, close ups are better, although a bit short. Too much advertising rather than real material ("preview" of the next volume, his software, short clips from his wife dancing). In the book, the self-serving writing style is a turn-off ("and more marketing ("buy my software"). Otherwise, it would deserve at least 4 stars and the material makes it one of the best self-teaching series, the other two would be Juan Martin's El Arte Flamenco and Dennis Koster's books. Compared to those two:
Pluses for Graf-Martinez:
- clearest explanation
- short example that focus on technique, rather than burying in a composition
Minus:
- exercises not musical,
- lack of pieces you want to play
All three have their pluses and minuses, but all are worth having.

Excellent! Fantastic Lesson package

Im familiar with buying all kinds of lesson books throughout my life. So I have to say that this combination book(tab)/cd/dvd is worth every penny! Everything is explained thoroughly, leaving you with completely understood concepts even to the most detailed little things on what you should be doing. Nothing will leave you wondering - whats going on. One of the best designed lesson packages Ive come across. The music used in the book is just so to the point and absolutely useful so that you can expand upon it any way you see fit. These are not "Cheezy" examples; but very inspiring as to what you can do with them once you've gotten the basics. The cd has ALL the songs. Which is an extreme Teaser leaving you wanting to buy the "2nd" volume just to follow the examples you hear on the CD. Everything is played at slow and normal speeds. And the examples on volume 1 CD which contain ALL the CD music of volume 2 just get better and better as the songs progress. There are like 94 songs altogether. So its packed full with complete progressive song arrangements that have purpose for learning. Not just thrown around examples. He put a lot of thought into this volume 1 lesson package. As for the DVD. Hi-def indeed. The DVD is JUST as detailed as BOTH the CD and Book. Everything is completely covered and explained in slow and normal speeds. Nothing will leave you scratching your head.
So really, Im telling you. Its worth it. You always have doubts when buying something as far as lesson books. But this is One that stands alone. I could guarantee you its that good. If you trust me on this review, you will be Very Happy that you heeded my time in writing this review. Just passing along a highly suggested review after I have watched and listened to this Volume 1 package. Nothing in this is boring at all. Its Very Good.

I have been a professional guitarist for about 15 years and I've always had a strong desire to learn how to play flamenco guitar authentically. I tried years ago but got frustrated because of the lack of materials available for study. This book gives you the fundamentals to instantly allow you to make a true flamenco guitar sound and with a lot of practice you can become quite proficient in the style. The best thing about this book is the detail that it goes into and how completely things are explained and then shown with excellent pictures. If you follow this book to the letter, you can play flamenco too! ole!

Just Enough

Ideal for those starting out on their study of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Era (as one would expect from a university history text), Owen Connelly's modest volume has much to recommend it: fresh, readable style; decent maps, a comprehensive bibliography (pointing the way for future purchases!) and quite a few interesting little kernels that one seldom comes across. I particularly enjoyed his insights into the siblings of Napoleon; Jerome's sponsorship of Gauss, Louis' campaign for breast-feeding, Joseph's conversion of El Prado into an art museum. I heartily recommend this book as an excellent staging ground for future operations into the hinterlands of Napoleonic literature. I also recommend Connelly's BLUNDERING TO GLORY as a vey good next step on your journey.

A Great Text by a Great Teacher

I had the pleasure of having Professor Conelly this past summer for a class on the French Revolution and Napoleon at the University of South Carolina. This book was the only text for the class. Reading a book is one thing, but hearing it straight from the horse's mouth is another entirely.

I didn't realize just how well known and respected he was until I saw him interviewed on a NOVA special on Napoleon. Trust me, this guy knows what he's talking about, and he writes a simple, concise, easy-to-read explanation of France from 1789 - 1815.
