Nice Done But Missing Some Songs

First of all the music looks like it's very accurate to the CD. These are beautiful arrangements. I gave it four stars because the collection does not include all the songs that were added to the Complete Sessions. You will not get A Case Of You, If You Could Read My Mind, Everybody's Talkin' and Heart of Gold. Too bad. These are wonderful songs. Thank you Diana Krall for your unique treatment of some of the great songs that deserve to be heard.

Magnificent Story with Wonderful Characters

I have read all of Jae's books and been very impressed with their storylines, and characters - but this one is by far the best. The book involves a novelist, Jorie, who is writing a lesbian book with a shape-shifter (not a were-animal, but a person of a different species than human). She comes to the attention of real shape-shifters who are intent on protecting their identity and nature from humanity because of fear of persecution and reprisal. Griffin is a saru, a shape-shifter assigned to investigate Jorie and find out who is her source of information. Griffin gradually comes to feel more for Jorie than she should, which leads her into confronting the shape-shifter hierarchy in protest of their decision to have Jorie killed.

The shape-shifter world is extremely well thought out, with clans, administrative bodies, and the necessary interaction with humanity. This elaborate structure is one of the things that make this book so compelling - you really understand the motivations and thought processes of all the shape-shifter characters. The motivations of Jorie are gradually revealed over the course of the book, with a surprise ending.

The action in this book is very deliberately paced, but the book remains compelling from the beginning to end. I highly recommend this book as one of the best of 2009 in lesbian fiction.

A Paranormal story for those who don't normally read those books

Jorie Price is a fairly successful, although reclusive, writer who is trying to write a different type of novel and that is giving her trouble. She's writing about two things she doesn't believe in, shape-shifters and romance. Her other books were about paranormal fiction and were easy to write, but this one is a struggle. She has no idea how much trouble it is about to cause her. The Wrasa are real, form an ancient society and they live among the humans trying to keep their existence a secret. They've heard about Jorie's book and they consider it a threat to them. Griffin Westmore, a member of the Saru, an elite group of soldiers, is sent on a mission to find out what Jorie knows, how she knows it, and, if necessary, to destroy the book and her.

As Griffin investigates Jorie and forms a friendly relationship with her, she suspects that something more is going on than Jorie trying to reveal the existence of the Wrasa. Griffin finds herself dealing with family relationships, politics among the shape-shifters and a commanding officer who is intent on seeing Jorie killed. She's always been a good soldier, but she's not going to follow an order until it makes sense to her. Jorie and Griffin find themselves being forced to work together as they are pursued by others who don't share Griffin's opinion. Two women who haven't been able to trust anyone now find that trust is the only thing that may save them and save the future of the Wrasa themselves.

Don't let the size of this book scare you away. Jae likes to write big books, but the characters are so compelling and the action moves so swiftly that you don't want to put them down. She takes this story through different levels. First, there is the intricate dance between Jorie and Griffin as they establish their acquaintance. Then there is the action and excitement of the chase as everyone seems out to find the women and hurt Jorie. At the end there is the tension of Griffin trying to prove to the Wrasa that, rather than their destroyer, Jorie might be their salvation.

Second Nature also includes symbolism and raises ethical questions. The reader can't help but draw parallels between the Wrasa and the history of gays and lesbians, two groups that have been persecuted and forced to hide among the larger society. As well, Griffin's battle between following orders and what feels appropriate is similar to issues that have been raised in numerous real incidents. As harsh as the Wrasa's methods may seem, humans aren't let off the hook either with difficult questions being raised about the treatment of other species and the abuse of nature.

Don't be deterred by the fact that this is a paranormal story either. Second Nature is a complex, yet thoroughly enjoyable tale and the creatures in it are presented in a totally believable manner. The biggest drawback to the book is that, once you start reading, it's hard to stop and the number of pages guarantees that you can't finish it in one night. It's worth it though. Give this book a chance.

Excellent storyline

This story has so many excellent characters that sometimes it can be overwhelming, but I recommend you read it or listen to the L-book version. When you read or listen your minds eye can see each and everyone in their human and shapeshifter persona. I have read many of Jae's works and love them all, but she out did herself this time.

I can't recommend this book enough!

I bought this book after a friend recommended it. I had no idea how I would go back to work and function as a company executive without sleep. I mean, I was used to some sleep deprivation, but hearing stories of babies not sleeping and crying most of the night had me worried about going back to work after maternity leave. I asked my OB about the book and she said she used the method with her children and said it worked, so I bought the book and don't have any regrets. I highly recommend it to everyone I know having a little one or who has a "colicky" baby! My experience with the method is below:

My husband and I both read the book and agreed we were on board with following the method prior to the little one's arrival. Not going to lie, the first week-and-a-half after birth was rough, but once a feeding and sleeping schedule was established (by 2 weeks old), I knew exactly what my baby needed and that made both of us happy. The little one was sleeping 6 hours by 6 weeks, 7 hours by 7 weeks, and added an hour of sleep each week until 12 weeks. She was sleeping 11.5-12 hours a night easily, and that was great! Now, because I was breast feeding, I did have to sacrifice some sleep to pump to keep my supply up, but I always had at least 6.5 hours of sleep straight. You must remember the title of this book is the amount of sleep the baby should be getting, not necessarily you (unless you're using some formula and get to sleep without worries of pumping).

We hit a small hiccup when my husband's parents came into town right as the little one turned 3 months because they had different views on how to parent (e.g. crying means just give the baby food). Ultimately it made our lives crazy because it messed up our little one's schedule so much that we put our foot down and said we are choosing to parent differently than how they raised their children, and it took three days to get back to normal again. I guess the moral of this is if the schedule does get messed up for a few days, be diligent and you can get back on track! I can't recommend this book enough!

Great way to get your babies the nutrition they need.

We bought this book shortly after our twins were born, and applied the concepts after starting around week 2-4. We got our baby boys on a 4 hour schedule by week 3 and had them eating 4.5 ounces during that week. Right now they are about 4.5 weeks old and we are diligently tracking all of thier activity. Our boys are well nourished and growing well. Already 10 pound babies, which is a growth of 3 pounds since birth. Our boys are fast growers and since they are at least 10 pounds AND consuming at least 24 ounces of formula or breastmilk in 24 hours; sometimes they are consuming 27 - 30 ounces of expressed breastmilk. Couldn't be more pleased. We have had better success when we bottle fed our boys using expressed breastmilk since it is easier to measure what they are getting. We do still also breastfeed our boys about 4 - 6 times a week when we can. You will definitely achieve sleep success more easily if you are fairly regimented about training, and remain regimented until a schedule is well-established.

Great Advice!

This method really works! We cleared it with our pediatrician first, as your baby needs to be steadily gaining weight in order to do this method. It took us about 3 weeks to set it from beginning to end, and now our daughter is 6 months old and we're so glad we did it. The one thing I didn't love about the book, which is why I didn't give it 5 stars, is that there is very little trouble-shooting advice. If things aren't going as they should or something unexpected comes up there's little guidance for it. We just took some guesses and stuck to the plan as much as possible and it eventually worked, though, so that was good enough for me.

Strong, but a cliffhanger

Like previous books, this one has both ground pounder and fleet battles. More attention is paid to the groundpounder viewpoint as that's where the main character's role is, but the fleet perspective is still very well done.

Bottom line I took one star off because of the ending. At the first of the book the author sets the expectation that this will wrap up a big arc and conclude a big piece of the story. It just doesn't. What the author really does is simply open up additional plot threads, there isn't any closure. Furthermore the author genuinely could have given us a few more chapters and still had his hooks in us for the next volume. It's insult to injury because the author is now going to work on two different series before coming back to this universe, which means a very long time waiting. I'll have long forgotten this series by the time it comes back and will have to re-read everything... so why such an ending? A few more pages giving us a clue what those new plot threads would even be about would have been harmless.

Good:
-Author does great job with alien cultures and shares their perspective
-Combat, guts, and glory
-Creative new tech, innovation, trickery (without spoiling anything, one word: Mechs!)
-A lot of plot progression
-Sorilla character continues to shine and grow
-The universe's complexity and detail continues to grow nicely with this book

Bad:
-No single truly memorable event in this book (like the last one when Sorilla was free-fallling down the space elevator cable and still shot a ton of bad guys, then grabbed the cable and slid the rest of the way down)
-Ending. C'mon author... just a few more chapters! You throw that ending out there and leave us hanging like that for the next year or two?
-Trying to refer back to DARPA Arpanet? That whole side effort was a bit awkward and unrealistic, even for sci-fi/fantasy. (Anyone knowledeable enough to get the reference is going to groan.)
-Constant allusion that humans are something super-special in comparison to other races doesn't really seem to balance with the rest of the universe and how the author presents all the alien races. Unique is fine, special attributes are fine, but somehow better than the other races in so many different ways? Unless this plays into the story somewhere further down the road it leaves an awkward feel every time some other race says "ooh the humans really seem to be better than all other races at X/Y/Z - I better watch out!"

Should have been better

This series is one of my favorite indie series on amazon. I've waited so long for this book to come out, but I would have gladly waited another year to see it come out right. It was such a disappointment, it's like it was written by two different people. The plot was poorly thought out and unforgivably rushed. Whole sections were unbelievable or downright ridiculous. The characters were radically different than previous books. It read like a bad first draft with no polish, no editing, and constant typos. The dialog was stale, the action passable but not thought out, the characters one dimensional. It was the complete polar opposite of the previous books in the series. If the author has any honor at all this book should be re-written and republished the way it should have been. It makes me hesitate about following any other series by you in fear that you might get bored and fail to conclude it properly.

Disappointing.

I enjoyed the first three novels in this series. Good stories, great action and adequate character development. Unfortunately, this one missed the mark.

First, the book was full of typos and misused words. Some were bad enough that you had to take time to go back and restructure the sentence to make sense out of it. Character development was also a problem in that you learned almost nothing new about any of the characters. Finally, the ending was abrupt and contrived. I knew there was a problem when I was 95% complete and felt I shouldn't be 50% through. There was just too much going on to end it all that fast.

It appeared this was the end of the series. I don't see how the author could pick it up and continue after the ending he left us with. It seemed the author was in a real hurry to crank out another novel. Too bad.
