About the Author

Nancy W. Sindelar is consultant to schools across the country in the areas of standards-based curriculum and assessment alignment (including alignment to the Common Core State Standards), collection, use and interpretation of student test data, teacher mentorship and the development of high-performing teacher teams. By focusing on data-driven instruction, She has helped schools move from state academic “watchlists’ to “most improved status, based on state test scores.

Sindelar is an Executive Consultant on assessment for the American Association of School Administrators (AASA). The author of Using Test Data for Student Achievement: Answers to No Child Left Behind, she also teaches graduate courses at California State University and Roosevelt University, specializing in leadership of effective organizations, school supervision, school law, school curriculum and educational assessment.

She brings more than thirty years’ experience in public education, as a teacher, department chair, assistant principal and assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and assessment as well as a university professor. She received her bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University, a master’s degree from DePaul University, a certificate of advanced studies from Concordia University, and a doctor of philosophy degree from Loyola University of Chicago. She was a visiting scholar with the English faculty at Cambridge University, England, served a four-year term as president of Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy Alumni Board and currently is a board member of the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park.

Simplistic Approach to Alignment and Data

This book provides a simplistic approach to aligning standards and setting up teachers to have conversations about data. Teachers in some districts may find this book somewhat elementary. Other districts who are just now implementing these common sense approaches may find this book to be helpful in setting up the basic systemic structures needed. Sindelar's words are very easy to follow. I would recommend this book most to new teachers in districts that already do this or need help in setting up the proper methods of curriculum alignment and don't have help within their district. I would also recommend it for administrators who have not taken coursework within the last 10 years. Few non-novice curriculum people would find this book to push their insight that thoroughly. However, this book has a purpose and serves it well.

A must read for all educators

The author did an excellent job stressing how important data is to increasing student achievement and closing the achievement gap between students. There are strategies on how to use assessment to drive instruction. Dr. Sindelar talks about how collecting data without putting it to use and not having an action plan is useless. The first step is sharing learning targets with students, aligning curriculum to standards, assessing, collecting data and re-teaching. This book is my go to book and it is a must read for everyone in education.

About the Author

Just what I was looking for

Pros:
I am so appreciative of this book. I have waited quite a while for this to be made available. I have owned Toonboom Harmony for a year now and for the most part I have had to rely on the application User Guide and video tutorials. But this book has more of a personal feel to it. He goes over practical things that an artist would use everyday. The book is not high on tech speak which is good. Just teaching you how to work the application.

If you ever visit the author's site he is very humorous and the book is no different. Just a relaxing read where you are getting things done. I enjoy specialized books such as this that teach me how to become more efficient with my software. Teaching you techniques where the application functions become just another extension of yourself. Very natural.

Cons:
Unfortunately before the release of this book Harmony moved from 10.3 to 11 which has more features. But the base knowledge to get one going is still very prevalent.

The next Con is the 3D capability. I simply CANNOT find solid tutorial material on the hybrid functionality of 2D/3D in Harmony. The manual and video tutorials provided by the company are very sterile. Not interesting at all. I had hoped to find that in this book, but no. The hybrid functionality seems to be highly sought after and Harmony is one of the few apps on the market that offers that feature. But, you cannot find anyone that is an expert that teaches it.

Other than those issues this book is more than work purchasing. Such a needed source for Toonboom customers.

Only Book Worth Reading on Toon Boom

This book is incredible! If you have any interest in learning or advancing you skillsets in Toon Boom, this is THE book. I have been trying to learn Toon Boom for a proof of concept cartoon due to the dying use of Flash animation. Tried to just jump into it because of knowing Flash and it was a massive learning curve. Like, Toon Boom slapped me upside the head so I tried learning from their tutorials and YouTube videos which still flicked me in the head. Then I bought this on a whim and it has been perfect. This book is so well structured that it walks you through the entirety of what can be done in Toon Boom. Simply brilliant.

Take My Money

Best introduction to Toonboom Pro for me. I was terrified switching from Studio to Pro and had no idea where all my beloved features went to, or how to activate the new features that interested me in Pro. I do not feel this went into enough details on the effects ToonBoom Pro has to offer using the Network, or how to set up riggings beyond the simple overall body(would have loved to learn about setting up a face rig and storing library templates for different facial pieces, but maybe next book ;) ). On the other hand though, I really loved this book. I would suggest it for anyone who is just getting animate, pro, or harmony from an upgrade or switching from flash or tvpaint to toonboom. It is an excellent resource,a monster when it comes to how much tips and tricks is crammed in, and holds you by the hand with wit and humor, guiding the path for first starters to teach Toonboom features fast. This book is not a complete "how to" for animation unfortunately. There are many theories still missing from it, and more indepth rigging like the rigging for more complex features, filters, and for many other special effects. I can understand though why it wouldn't be in this book(it is already a big book already). Though, If another book were to come out for these topics in Toonboom, I would buy it in a heart beat.

thought provoking

in reading this book, one understands the trauma that our society imposed on women in the past and wishes to re-impose on them in the future. women were denied the healthcare they needed when faced with an unwanted pregnancy and women were denied contraceptives. (sometimes only able to get them with their husband's permission. no husband; no permission.) and the abstinence-only right would wish to do this again where no one has access to information on birth control nor accessibility to contraceptives. this debate is without a winner unfortunately as the pro-choice understand the need to protect a woman's right to control the health of her own body and the anti-choice people believe that a woman has no right to make this decision. and there can be no compromise or middle ground.

if only men had babies then there would be no debate. abortion would be completely legal and we could discuss other important matters.

read this book and understand why some believe there can be no going back to pre-roe v. wade.

Harrowing

This collection of stories bluntly illustrates why having reproductive choice is essential to a society. The chilling stories from women, their families, the practitioners, the investigators, and the people who tried to patch up the women still rivals any horror-suspense movie which I've seen.

I was particularly struck by Paula's recollection of her 1963 illegal abortion. The juxtaposition of the Miss America pageant airing while she was undergoing an illegal abortion (p. 225) reinforced the frustration that she felt at having to go to those depths. She got her abortion after finding out her husband left her because being a single parent was impossible in that era and temporarily going to a maternity home was impractical already with one young son. She explicitly notes that the contents of her uterus did not look like what is now displayed on anti-choice placards (pp. 226-227). Finally, she juxtaposed her daughter's 1991 legal abortion (pp. 227-229) to emphasize the critical difference that legalization made for women's physical and emotional health.

Women occupy center stage in this anthology, but men's voices are also heard. Two powerful testimonies come from 'Dr. Bert' who said that 'it was the system and not the abortionist that killed her' (p. 195) and 'Coroner Fred' who emphatically said that after Roe v. Wade was decided 'the deaths stopped overnight in 1973 and I never saw another abortion death in all the 18 years after that until I retired' (p. 13).

Both of those people are older than the 'baby boom generation' who were participating in the 'sexual revolution' and were not a part of it, but their experiences of what the 'good old days' were really like are a needed reality check---especially now. It is indicative of how little rights women really have if there are elected officials in this country eager to return us to those times.

I reccomend this book to anybody needing to learn about reproductive politics.

First-person stories of illegal abortions' effects

Abortion kills embryos. Illegal abortion kills women and embryos. Which is worse? The stories from this book show how women's deaths from illegal abortions reverberate throughout society.

Every American, and especially every legislator, should read this book. It is a collection of stories, most told in the first person, of lives affected by illegal abortion: a county coroner, an abortionist, a police officer, a boyfriend, a girlfriend, a husband, a child. And of course the women survivors themselves, who were maimed, traumatized, raped, left near death, treated with disgust and revulsion, or abandoned and deserted.

Read this book, then pass it on to your boyfriend or your sister, to a friend or to someone you meet at the grocery store. Give a copy to the sidewalk harasser at your local women's health center. Send a copy to your federal representative and your state assembly person. Leave a copy in hotel rooms and coffee houses.

Abortion has been legal for 24 years in this country. Only a single generation of women has grown up not knowing the horrors of illegal abortion. We must never go back.

Coroner Fred: "The deaths [from botched abortion attempts] stopped overnight in 1973 [when abortion was legalized], and I never saw another abortion death in all the 18 years after that until I retired. That ought to tell people something about keeping abortion legal."

For anyone interested in Scottish history or genealogy, this book is a must. Extensively researched; it documents the historic residencies and holdings of even some of the more obscure Clans and families. Pictures and drawings embellish the readable text.

This book gives information of what I needed to know for the books that I write. It came in good condition (with a few dogears, but that doesn't matter). It gives information of where the clans lived, and usually shows pictures of the castles, which is what I needed for my books.

Mujeres que se portan MAL es un libro de cuentos cuyo título sugerente invita a leerlo. Como si con cada página que uno pasa estuviera participando de un acto prohibido, ilegal, pecaminoso. Si leer es portarse mal, entonces he sido culpable. Este libro se podría considerar como una carta de presentación al mundo literario de esta autora que entiendo es mas novelista que cuentista. No tengo dudas que una vez los críticos y criticones lean a estas mujeres que se portan MAL será inevitable que le abran las puertas a mayores éxitos. Algunos cuentos son mejores que otros pero eso sucede con todos los pecados. Algunos pecados son mas graves que otros. De mi parte entiendo que no comprar este libro y no leerlo sería el acto mas maligno que cualquier ser humano pueda hacer. El único MAL que encontrará en este libro se encuentra en la última palabra del título.

About the Author
Linda Steg is professor of Environmental Psychology at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. She has written extensively on factors influencing environmental behaviour, effects and acceptability of environmental policies, and the impact of environmental conditions on quality of life. She is the current president of the Environmental Psychology Division at the International Association of Applied Psychology.

Agnes E. Van den Berg is an environmental psychologist, specialising in research on people's responses to natural environments. She has published in both the academic and popular press on topics such as landscape preferences, health benefits of nature, children and nature and evidence-based design of healing environments. She has worked at Wageningen University and Research Centre in the Netherlands in a variety of roles for 15 years and has recently been appointed as a special professor of landscape perception at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands.

Judith I. M. de Groot is a senior lecturer in Applied Psychology at Bournemouth University, UK. She received her PhD at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. Her research interests include explaining and changing pro-environmental behaviours, with a focus on how values and norms affect pro-environmental behaviour.

Interesting, but confusing

Very interesting book on a subject that every designer should know the basics of. The front cover looks promising, made me think this kind of pleasant environment would be analyzed in the book. What color combinations are beautiful? How is a strong sense of place achieved? Why do so many people like Gaudi's architecture? Instead I am left confused on many issues.

Most confusing: What is environmental psychology really about? Is it about the psychology of how humans is affected by their immediate environment (What interests me as a designer) or the psychology of how to make people more interested in environmental protection? These seems like two barely related subject, and both are discussed in the book. Does "environmental psychology" refer to both of these subjects?
Especially confusing was the chapters "In Latin America", as if Latin america is so different from the rest of the world or the people there so strange that they have their own psychology.

If you are a designer interested in how the environment you design can affect people psychologically, there certainly is useful information in this book. If you are an environmentalist trying to understand better people's attitudes and trying to affect them, there will also be some interesting information. I don't think a lot of people will fit both of these categories.

OK, but not thrill packed.

This book was written with an emphasis on European research and applications, not targeted for the US market. I can't say that I realized that when I first purchased it. The book is OK, and I read the whole thing- but I can't say that I was engrossed in it. I am a retired psychologist, interested in environmental issues.

I have several years of education and can honestly say that a lot of text books are less than enthralling and downright boring. This one was not. I really enjoyed the content and how it was written.

Modern international business has its origins in the overseas trade of the Middle Ages. Of the various communities active in trade in the Islamic countries at that time, records of only the Jewish community survive. Thousands of documents were preserved in the Cairo Geniza, a lumber room attached to the synagogue where discarded writings containing the name of God were deposited to preserve them from desecration. From them Professor Goitein has selected eighty letters that provide a fascinating glimpse into the world of the medieval Jewish traders.

As the letters vividly illustrate, international trade depended on a network of personal relationships and mutual confidence. Organization was largely through partnerships, based usually on ties of common religion but often reinforced by family connections. Sometimes the partners of Jews were Christians or Muslims, and the letters show these merchants working together in greater harmony than has been thought, even in partnerships that lasted through generations. The services rendered to a friend or partner and those expected from him were great, and the book opens with an angry letter from a merchant who believed he had been let down by his friend.

The life of a trader was full of dangers, as the letter describing a shipwreck illustrates, and put great strain on personal relationships. One of the most moving letters is that written to his wife by a man absent in India for many years while endeavoring to make the family's fortunes. Although never ceasing to love her and longing to be with her, he offers to divorce her if she feels she can wait for him no longer. A decisive event in the life of the great Jewish philosopher, Moses Maimonides, was the death of his brother David, who drowned in the Indian Ocean. Printed here is the last letter David wrote, describing his safe crossing of the desert and announcing his intention to go on to India, against his brother's instructions.

Professor Goitein has provided an introduction and notes for each letter, and a general introduction describing the social and spiritual world of the writers, the organization of overseas trade in the Middle Ages, and the goods traded. The letters demonstrate that although it reached from Spain to India, the traders' world was a cohesive one through which these men could move freely and always feel at home.

This is a translation of eighty letters by both substantial and lesser businessmen, describing conditions, inventory and some personal matters during a two hundred year period starting around 1000 CE. Recovered in Cairo in the late nineteenth century as part of a large trove of mainly religious documents, they are the most basic sort of source material that an historian might wish for. Covering the wide geographic range of the Islamic world from Spain to Indonesia, they present brief pictures, blurry or clear, of the preoccupations, experiences, and material aspects of a world otherwise lost to us.

Although lacking in the novelistic flair that a historical interpretation at its best would provide, these letters provide vivid realities. Goitein's closely related and much longer A MEDITERRANEAN SOCIETY fills in the background with greater narrative continuity.

Poignant, eloquent, irreverent, humorous and vastly entertaining!

It would be very difficult to justly critique this novel. I've never read any of his other books prior to "The Cardinal's Sin" which is absolutely spellbinding. Each character is so well developed that I feel as though I've known them intimately and empathize with their struggles.. The plot is intriguing with each subplot a perfect adverb to the central action. The main characters will remain with me for a long time to come and I'm certain to reread this book, maybe multiple times. It is vastly entertaining, at times irreverent and filled with quickly moving action and acute suspense. As a Catholic, it was difficult to come to terms with the revelation of the Cardinal's role in the story. How tragic his suffering and the effect of his decisions, influenced by his environment and conflicts from childhood on. This is a very poignant story, powerfully and excellently told. Every piece fits like a well made jigsaw puzzle and leaves the reader with a sense of accomplishment upon completion. I wish I could recommend it with more eloquence. I believe this novel is one for mature readers. It is not one I could recommend to my 16 year old granddaughter and it is my hope that it will not serve as more kindling for the antipathy toward the Catholic church, which like all others is filled with people who at times are seekers, doubters trying to find their way. We all are never more than saved sinners on a road of sanctification, running the race, awaiting the complete transformation promised. Until then we try and fail, and as St. Paul writes, "we do that which we do not wish to do rather than what we desire to," and he acknowledges that Christ is the only One who can deliver us from ourselves (paraphrased from an epistle of Paul in the New Testament of "The Holy Bible.") Noir with a Twist of Lime

Jake Travis is a card-carrying member of special-ops. During his early morning run in London’s Kensington Gardens, on the last day of vacation with his girlfriend Kathleen, Jake makes two errors. First, he fails to tell Kathleen that he had accepted an assignment to kill an assassin while on their vacation. And almost as important, he offed the wrong person. And the victim was a Cardinal. Wrong bird, Jake.
Back in St. Pete Beach, Jake and his entourage try to figure out how this hit went so wrong. Who was behind it? Why was the intended victim dressed as a Cardinal? Why was a real Cardinal at that particular place at that time of morning? And by the way, where is the guy that Jake was really supposed to kill?
Jake’s personality is more complex than appears on the surface. A snazzy dresser (silk shirts, and tee shirts with pockets), he is glib and irreverent, with an eye for women and boats and a bungalow on an island that affords him the opportunity to admire both. On the other hand, he is surprisingly well-read, enjoys fine champagne and music--listening to pops/blues/jazz on his Magnavox—and he even has a cat. I enjoyed this character so much that I kept forgetting what he does for a living!
Lane’s writing style is reminiscent of Steve Berry with a twist of Chandler. And speaking of twists, they are replete throughout, both in the plot and in Lane’s stunningly acute similes:
“He was in the vestments of his trade: black robe, high, starched collar, and long sleeves. If there was a wrinkle in his garments, it was not detectable. If there was sunshine in his personality, likewise. He looked like a prize-winning gourd.”
“The words swirled in my head like a busted sentence that I couldn’t piece together. I felt like a math savant stuck in a literature class.”
“Her hair was pulled back so tight it looked as if it were threatening to secede from her forehead.”
The book is a fast read, thoroughly enjoyable. The supporting characters in the book are well-developed and also likeable. There is plenty of sarcasm, intrigue, and a good theology lesson for a non-Catholic.
Robert Lane is a new author for me. I will definitely read the two earlier Jake Travis books.

Fascinating Read

Jake Travis is on a European vacation with his girlfriend, Kathleen, who is the love of his life. Before the vacation ends, Jake receives an assignment to kill an assassin who has been targeting the loved ones of Special Ops agents. He completes the seemingly simple assignment – the target generally dresses as a Cardinal, so he’s easy to pick out – and prepares to return home. However, he soon learns that he has killed the wrong man, and to make matters worse, the man he killed is a real Cardinal, and a popular one at that. When Jake confesses to Kathleen, she is angry and no longer wants to see him. Jake feels that he must get to the bottom of the debacle and find out why the Cardinal has used him to basically commit suicide and let the assassin go free. He also must find the assassin and finish his original assignment.

The Cardinal’s Sin is the third installment in the Jake Travis series by award-winning author Robert Lane, and it is a well-written and fascinating tale. Lane is a skilled wordsmith, and weaves his story in such a way that readers will be on the edge of their seats. One very appealing attribute to Lane’s style is that he has the ability to add humor to lighten what is a serious and deep novel. The characters are interesting; Jake is a blend of several popular suspense characters: sort of a maverick like Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch, a man with integrity and a sense of fairness like Lee Child’s Jack Reacher, a man with international intrigue like Brad Thor’s Scot Harvath and Vince Flynn’s Mitch Rapp, and a sense of humor like Harlan Coben’s Myron Bolitar.

The story has ties to Catholicism, and as Travis investigates further, he learns that corruption in the church is possibly the underlying cause of several deaths and ultimately the death of the Cardinal. There are twists and turns, as is expected in a good suspense novel, and just when the reader thinks that all of the ends are tied up and the truth has come out, the story takes a turn to a very unexpected, but satisfying end.

The Cardinal’s Sin is highly recommended, and readers will surely add Jake Travis to their lists of favorite protagonists.
