The origin of social institutions is an old concern in social theory. Currently it has re-emerged as one of the most intensely debated issues in social science. Among economists and rational choice theorists, there is growing awareness that most, if not all, of the social outcomes that are of interest to explain are at least partly a function of institutional constraints. Yet the role of institutions is negligible both in general equilibrium theory and in most neoclassical economic models. There is a burgeoning substantive interest in institutions ranging from social movements, to formal organizations, to states, and even international regimes.

Rational choice theorists have made great strides in elucidating the effects of institutions on a variety of social outcomes, but they have paid insufficient attention to the social dynamics that lead to the emergence of these institutions. Typically, these institutions have been assumed to be a given, rather than considered as outcomes requiring explanation in their own right. Sociological theorists, in contrast, have long appreciated the role of social structural constraints in the determination of outcomes but have neglected the role of individual agents.

Michael Hechter is professor emeritus in the department of Sociology at the University of Washington. He is the author of numerous books. He became an Elected Fellow to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2004 and has been featured in Who's Who. He is also currently on editorial boards for a numerous amount of journals.

Karl-Dieter Opp is professor of sociology at Univesitat Leipzig. He has been a Fellow of the European Academy of Sociology since 1999 and has been member of the Council and Treasurer since 2000. He is also current on the advisory board for the magazine Mind and Society.

Reinhard Wippler is professor of theoretical sociology at the University of Utrecht and scientific director of the Interuniversity Center for Sociological Theory and Methodology.

He is currently serving as visiting professor at the University of Washington, and before that was a Fellow of New College at Oxford University. Dorothy McRae-McMahon is a retired minister of the Uniting Church in Australia. She is an internationally recognised creator and writer of religious rituals, and the first woman to be a moderator of the World Council of Churches Worship Committee.

From the INTRODUCTION
Rituals are about honoring and marking significant moments in our journey through life. When we create a ritual we designate a special time, place, people, words, and actions to mark the transition as a meaningful life passage. When we solemnize these passages we are often enabled to connect ourselves to something larger―family, community, tradition, or our own inner spirit.

When we attend to our special life transitions through ritual, it can be about having someone take us through a caring journey of reflection. It can be about believing that we can live respectfully with ourselves, and that others can love us as we are. It can be about giving due respect to deep pain or grief, or marking a moment that is cause for celebration in a way that goes beyond simply having a party. It can involve setting aside a special time to stop and reflect by ourselves on what is happening to us and how we are feeling.

Many of us suffer from a lack of ritual in our lives. Sometimes it can be because this part of our lives once took place within religious institutions and for a variety of reasons no longer does so. Often it is because the culture to which we belong has lost some of its old rituals. Of course, some of us create our own small rituals―such as a monthly potluck with friends or rituals around sporting events. However, these simple rituals do not usually carry in them a clear focus on our pain, grief, celebration, or joy which mark particular stages of our life journey.

Those of us who have no connection with an organized religion still desire significant and personal ceremonies for birth, naming, puberty, marriage, and death. Indeed, people in all cultures have ceremonies to mark these major life events. French anthropologist, Arnold van Gennep coined the term rites de passage to describe the transitions that require rituals. Typically the rituals will address one or more of three phases of a transition: separation from a previous state or way of identifying oneself; being between one state and another and in the process of discovering what lies ahead; and incorporation, when the new sense of self or new position has been assimilated.

We often need to create a symbol or symbolic act to recognize and celebrate the grand moments in our lives, or as a statement of hope that, against the odds, we will survive and “come home” to peacefulness, or to forgiveness and hard-won joy.

The strength of rituals also lies in their structured style. They give us boundaries for the passages of our lives. People who feel their grief may never end may get a sense of security by the formality of a ritual and the fact that someone else is in charge who will take them through certain processes with clarity and responsibility. The joy of celebrating a special time may stay with us, but the ritual gives us a special moment to remember and look back upon for years to come.

"This is an outstanding text on computer organization compared to what we have today. This text has several aspects that are very important for undergraduates and unique compared to existing texts, including i) required level of emphasis on I/O and buses (instead of focusing only on processor, cache and memory), ii) in-depth discussion on memory as well as disk technology, iii) use of ARM ISA as a vehicle, and iv) making the practical connection of architecture with application domains including multimedia and compression. On one hand this book provides lot of interesting and required insights. On the other hand, it makes interesting for readers to understand the link between computer organization and real-world applications."

"I think it is a great idea to use ARM because it is so popular in embedded systems and the students may see ARM processors in other classes later. Unlike some other texts which concentrate on CPUs, this book covers CPU and as well as other parts of a computer system in details, i.e. memory, bus, Input/output. Chapter 12 is my favorite because I/O and buses are important topics in computer architecture."

About the Author
Alan Clements studied Electronics at the University of Sussex. He was awarded a Ph.D. at Loughborough University in equalizers for digital data transmission in 1976. During the 1970s when literature on microcomputer design was comparatively rare, Dr. Clements wrote one of the first books in this area, The Principles of Computer Hardware. It was one of the first undergraduate texts to cover the whole spectrum of computer hardware at an introductory level, with topics ranging from Boolean algebra to peripherals that measure rotational velocity. In the 1980s Dr. Clements wrote a definitive text on microprocessor systems design which featured Motorola processors. Motorola honored Dr. Clements by endowing him with a personal chair at Teesside. Following his earlier successes Dr. Clements has become increasingly interested in the problems of teaching computer architecture and involved with education. In 2001 he became chair of the Computer Society's international student competition, CSIDC and in the same year received a National Teaching Fellowship in the UK, the UK's highest award for higher education. In 2009 he was elected Fellow of the IEEE for contributions to computer science education and became also became second Vice President of the IEEE Computer Society. Dr. Clements is the recipient of the 2002 Computer Science Engineering Undergraduate Teaching Award (IEEE CS) for teaching excellence reflected on textbooks with major impact on computer architecture education as well is the 2007 Taylor L. Booth award recipient for outstanding contributions to education in the field of computer architecture.

Good book, but missing helpful study tools.

This is a good book. It has a ton of information, maybe too much information. I had to use this book for one of my CS classes. The content of the book was great, but there were a few issues with the book, which is why I only gave it 4 stars. First, many of the chapters are massive. Some of the chapters are approaching 100 pages, and they are jam-packed with information. I have been a straight-A student in Computer Science since 2008, but I still found this book hard to follow at times, because there was too much information packed into each chapter.

However, the two main problems that I had with this book, is that the index is almost useless. I use the indices of textbooks religiously. I need to be able to quickly look up information, especially, when a book is this jam-packed with information. The chapters are too large to quickly scan them and find some information; however, the index never worked for me. None of the topics that we needed in my class were included in the index, even though the book covered those topics. I found myself forever flipping through the book trying to find the information I needed. I wasted so much time.

On top of that, this book has no glossary. In my opinion, that is also a huge oversight. I need the glossary so I can quickly look up terms and find the definition of things. I found it very hard to study with this book, because I wasn't able to find my way around it very easily. Topics are split up through multiple chapters and I never had any idea where I was at, or where I needed to look to find information.

If the author is reading this, and plans on writing a second edition, make sure to include a glossary, at the very least. It would also be nice to have a way to quickly look up instructions. What if I needed to quickly look up MVN or STRB to see what it meant? There is no way to do that with this book. I am left flipping page after page until I get lucky and find the instructions, or I have to abandon the textbook and start looking online, which defeats the purpose of me paying for such a high-priced book. All of the information in text books today can be found online. One of the advantages I like about textbooks, is that they help organize the information you require, so it can be easily located. This book failed to do that.

Overall, I am still giving it 4 stars, because there is a ton of good information in this book. It is loaded with code examples, diagrams and other resources to help you understand the topics. I can tell someone put a lot of hard work into writing this book, they just slipped on a few important tools, like a usable index and glossary.

This book is clearly written by academics for academia. The author seems to be a bit rough an unapologetic about it. I am sure there are better books and authors out there for this material, but if this is the book you are assigned, you have to make due with what you are given.

One of the Finest in its Genre

This text is quite a gem. The chapters do not need to be studied sequentially, as the authors wrote
so as to create each chapter as independent from the others as possible. Within chapters, the separate sections
are also somewhat independent. The pace in each chapter starts slowly and simply, and then quickens
to more advanced material. Emphasis is placed on underlying principles throughout. Problem sets are also creatively
arranged,from the simple progressing to more advanced. Highlights include a beautiful first chapter on sequences and series,
chapter two on nonlinear differential equations is a treat, and chapter six on vector field theory is crystal clear.
An appendix compares Riemann to Lebesgue Integration in a simple manner. Each Chapter in this text is a delight.
I would be remiss if I did not single out the Chapter Seven, pertaining to Partial Differential Equations: Simply put, one
of the best single-chapter introductions to be encountered. D'Alambert's formula derived, Laplace and Dirichlet problems
discussed, Solutions by Integrals Transforms and Green's Functions expounded with the utmost of clarity (All in 100 Pages).
Merely a thorough foundation of calculus is prerequisite.

Classical Applied Mathematics Text

I have this text (and its like new) from back in my University days. Although not a prescribed textbook it always got me out of trouble in advanced engineering maths. Its a classical text on Applied Mathematics. Along with Boas Mathematical methods in the Physical Sciences I give them both 5 stars.

Still a classic

I ordered a new copy of this book after losing my original from university days. I have found it occasionally invaluable in engineering for twenty years - basically "everything you ever wanted to know about math" in a relatively compact text, without being one of those huge and awful multi-author collection "handbooks". The fact that it is still in print from the 1960's bears out that I am not the only one with this opinion.

That like 10 episode scripts had been prepared

"We now deliver you to a future that was created in the past--told as if we were in the present."

This statement from editor Lukas Kendall neatly sets the stage for a non-fiction narrative that nonetheless has all the trappings of an epic suspense novel, courtesy of author Preston Neal Jones.

The first fifty pages are devoted to what was going on behind the scenes between the cancellation of the original TV series in '69 and the film's go-ahead in '77-'78. Boy, does the first section clear up a lot of misconceptions this reader and now ardent Trekker had back then as a teenager. Who knew a ST2 series on a proposed 4th network was brewing? That like 10 episode scripts had been prepared?

It is also evident in the following two hundred pages that everyone from the producer to the director to the cast to the lowliest of support staff felt like kids again. They were all committed to something they truly believed in. They badly wanted it to come out right because hey, this is Star Trek, it's got to be done right. Forget the fans, we'll never forgive ourselves if it tanks.

"The main thing that we heard, the one constant that came from the front office was, 'Make that release date. Just make that release date. However you do it, whatever shape the film may be in, make the date. If you lose something, it's your judgment to do what you have to do. But we must not fail to make that date.'"

Sheer dogged bottom-line determination and then some on the part of everyone involved would be essential if they were to pull the picture off by the impossible December 7, 1979 release date. Which could have been a severe date of infamy for Paramount Pictures if not for the man behind the above-cited quote. If there is a Hero among many heroes in the picture's frenzied improvised creation, well, everyone mentioned that man, the director. Every one.

Robert Wise was pure glue. The guiding hand. The calming force. The rock.

There is a palpable sense of tension, pressure, anxiety and dread smoldering throughout the voluminous minutiae in which nothing is spared. Accordingly, there are times the reading becomes a cerebral chore what with the massive amounts of technical details alone—one of the drawbacks of an unabridged literary roadshow--and during the [infrequent!] times when it became too much I gave the text a surface scan. And for that reason alone it was such a treat whenever the comments of Sam Nicholson and Brian Longbotham, who are credited for "Production Kinetic Lighting Effects" are interspersed. A wise piece of editing! They are a regular Rosencrantz & Guildenstern hiding in the wings, wondering what exactly did this huge expanding Paramount universe want from them.

In that vein, the scope of the 'chronicle' and the way it is arranged is impressive, for it gives context to the evolving Star Trek phenomenon in real time and beyond. And there is something for everyone be they Trekkians or Jerry Goldsmithians or movie technicians; lovers of movies and moviemakers; readers of science fiction or watchers of science fiction films; or both, any and all.

I also feel some readers will be moved to rethink unfavorable first impressions of the film when it was released.

First instincts normally tell me to go all orthodox academic i.e. match what I'm reading to the cited sequence in the film and just fast forward and rewind and pause/stop my way through and that way I can get the full benefit of what I'm reading, and THEN when I'm done with the book and parsing the film watch the whole shebang as a pièce de résistance. In consideration of real life, practicality won out. Besides, I was psyched! And that's what a good book does, no? By the five hundredth page, I simply could not resist and rewatched ST:TMP. At the time it premiered, I had unfavorable first impressions. The "Director's Edition" has restored items absent from the theatrical presentation which vexed writers, actors, and techno personnel alike.

This viewing utterly blew me away. "Return to Tomorrow – The Filming of Star Trek: The Motion Picture" is a prime contributor to my delightful about-face.

If You Like To Look At The Pictures

...you won't find any. Not even a line drawing or pen-and-ink portrait. It's an "oral history" alright, with nothing but words to show for what amounts to a compilation of interviews with just about everyone who was anyone associated with the film. And yet it all works, in places with surprising insight and humility...consider what they were aiming for...while the sheer effort to conduct, collate, and convert to a comprehensive and chronological narrative all the memories and mental imagery makes the book worth the purchase price and merit a place on a "Trekkian's" bookshelf.

Reading it also has a perhaps-odd side effect: Now I wish to first re-view the original theatrical release, then its later "Director's Edition" that principally reflects Robert Wise's decades-after ability to digitally enhance and further edit and complete scenes of the film as originally intended and described in the book while not effectively hamstrung by the studio's demand to meet a release date.

The movie was complex in terms of the ambition it represented. However, the reason it did not turn out as excellent as the intention was is because emotions got in the way. The proof was Paramount choosing to give a ridiculous release date without conferring with those people involved in making it. Like McCoy said in the movie, "Jim your pushing, your people know their jobs!"
